Hi, I'm a new university student from oversea.
I'm using my laptop which has utorrent seeding and downloading by itself.
I did not turn it on intentionally, it was running since I was at my home country.
Will I get into trouble?
The contents are movies and software..

Please advice. Thanks!

Stop, delete all the torrents and related software.

Think about using VPN from now on.

I have removed the torrent client and the downloaded content from my computer.

How about books (pdf)? I've downloaded some not from torrent but from regular html website.

Any affordable VPN do you recommend?

Who started uTorrent in your laptop?

Who opened the .torrent files in your laptop?

Distribution of copyrighted content is illegal in New Zealand. P2P distribution of copyright content may attract notices and after three notices from copyright owners your Internet account may be terminated.

Currently it seems the music industry is the most active at tracking downloaders.

Download of pirated software brings security issues as well, and your PC could possibly be infected with malware.

Using torrents itself is legal, its the content that may be illegal and you can get in trouble for. So if youre only using torrents to get Linux ISO's etc, then youre fine. If using it to obtain latest movies and music, thats a different story...

As the other mentioned, if you did not install a torrent program, remove it and get a decent virus scanner running.

As mentioned, I'm the one that downloaded the content, but I was at my home country,
as my utorrent client is set to turn on when my laptop turns on, I arrived new zealand using my laptop as usual without turning them off.

But I have removed them from my computer, both client and downloaded contents..

You can still have been picked up and whoever's internet connection (the account holder) you were using could be sent Infringement notices for the content you were seeding.
