An article on Motherboard http://motherboard.vice.com/read/warranty-void-if-removed-stickers-are-illegal says the USA has a law which makes warranty void if removed stickers illegal - it talks about how manufacturers use these to limit who can do repairs or make modifications. Does anyone know if we have an equivalent consumer protection law here in NZ?

Not sure, I had a laptop seller try to tell me that my warranty was invalid once because I peeled all the stupid intel and nvidia and other stickers off the palmrest area. Who the hell leaves those stupid things on?

Yeah I do - along the same lines as the reasoning in the Motherboard article. When it comes to repairs or upgrades, lock in reduces competition and that usually means higher cost.

That's ridiculous.

Apparantly I could have it sent for repair but not swapped straight out in store - was a 3 day old laptop with really bad backlight bleed unless I put pressure on the screen corner. HP junk one that was a "good enough" thing for travelling with.

Was original packaging also a condition of the exchange? That one sounds like some kind store policy for.returns/refund scenario rather than an actual warranty requirement.
