Hi,

I've been looking at Telecom's UFB bid and was wanting to understand the cost for them to deploy the network a bit better. I'm particularly interested in the capital cost to deploy fibre to each premise.

I have seen numbers in general presentations quoting $3000 per premise, which breaks down to $2000 to pass the premise at the street and $1000 to connect the premise. I believe these numbers typically reflect a greenfield deployment scenario.

Given Telecom has already deployed a FTTN network, I wondered if any of the experts on this forum had any idea of what the cost would be to upgrade from FTTN ?

I would assume the cost to connect the premise would be the same, but how much would the cost to pass the premise come down ?

Any help appreciated

I doubt it would come down by much, the bulk of costs are in cable runs past the premises and especially in areas of low density but also around CBD where there is lots of stuff under the street. Not sure if either Telecom or the power companies have that much empty duct installed waiting for the fibre programme, but they still need to install access for connectors/splicing and get drops into premesis. even with directional drilling or micro-trenching its going to be a very major change. Telecom doesnt even have a VoIP product yet, I would be suprised if they are ready.

Time to find a new industry!

sounds like the government is fixing up minor parts of the fibre programme to improve competition, although that article doesnt say if its official. Disappointing that government still seems bent on doing the regulatory holiday despite opposition from virtually everyone except Telecom. Also, allowing LFC to operate their own Layer 2 network makes the chances of really effective competition for dark fibre seem pretty remote.

Time to find a new industry!
