Some time recently my phone stopped synchronising with these apps:

Google Calendar
Google Contacts (Gmail address book)
Gmail Inbox

They're the ones I've noticed, not sure if anything else is involved.

In Settings > Accounts & Sync, the "Background data" and "Auto-sync" boxes are ticked.  In Manage Accounts, my Gmail address is set to sync Contacts, Gmail and Calendar (but not Picasa Web Albums).

I've gone to my Gmail Inbox on the phone, where it indicates, when I "go to labels", "Sync last 4 days" - and showing in the Inbox is a single email from 18 Nov, which has long gone from my Inbox in Gmail on the web browser on my laptop.

... while writing this post I've gone into the Settings in Gmail on the phone, and discovered the "4 days" is something I can alter, and have changed it to "1 day" to see if it makes any difference, which it didn't.

I'm not sure where else to look for settings to make this work.  Does anyone have any ideas?

Sorry for asking a silly question, but just to be sure.

You do have data / network access via a mobile provider or WiFi?

Some times mobile data gets turned off and we don't realise it.

Settings -> Wireless and Network settings -> Mobile network Settings -> Data enabled

Silly questions aren't always so silly!  It's so easy to leave out a little bit of important information.

The "data enabled" box where you indicated is ticked.

Yes, I have WiFi here at home, and I'm connected to it.  Confirmed today...

When I first started writing the initial post this afternoon, I included Dropbox in the list of things not syncing - but in the process of composing the post I turned synching off then on for Dropbox and then the photo I'd taken that hadn't uploaded then promptly did so.

Should have mentioned that.  Have also tried turning off then on the syncing for the Google options, but without the same satisfying result.

I go out of my way to disable all this stuff. ;-) [referring to Gmail and Sync]

What happens when you do a manual refresh in your Android Gmail inbox?

Can you send yourself an email from another email account and then using your Android Gmail account, do a manual refresh and see the email in Android Gmail.

Your password hasn't been changed has it. You can still log into your online Gmail account.

You indicate that you've done most of what would be required on the Android device side.
How about the Google side?
Does your online gmail account (browser gmail login) have any access restrictions in:

Authorised Access to your Google Account

This should have a few references with Android login services allowing full access.

This may be nothing but Me not knowing what the answer is, I'm just suggesting a few ideas in the hope that something triggers an 'ah ha' moment.

In you online account select account -> security -> Authorised sites and accounts.

Is any remote sites access revoked there?

I use Kaiten and or MailDroid and they report alerts on the inbox if there is an odd connection status event. I haven't used Gmail in Android for years as I mostly delete it from my Android OS, so I'm not sure what it does these days. :-)

Hi Dr Strangelove,

Thank you for all your ideas.  The Google authorisations seem to be fine, and I fixed the problem with the mail box by archiving the email that was "stuck" in the Inbox, but that didn't fix the Calendar or Contacts.

However you did give me food for thought, and last night I tried Googling the problem again with some new ideas for search terms, and found a suggestion given to someone else in a similar situation to uninstall recently installed apps.

So I did that, and removed Evernote, Families, Dropbox and a stopwatch app whose name I don't recall.  Waited in-between each one for things to come right but was probably a bit impatient and didn't wait long enough.  But eventually the syncing started up again after all four were removed, so it was one of the apps for sure.

Now I have to work out which one, which I'll work on as time allows.  Now that I know what I'm looking for it will be easy to test and observe, and I won't be in a rush like I was (trying not to be) with the uninstalling last night.

Thanks again.  :-)

Wendy

A little bit further down the line, I've now worked out what was going on.

It was Evernote that was preventing Google from syncing, and that was because the phone was low on space (which I discovered after posting on the Evernote forum for assistance).  Once I cleared out some factory-installed apps that I don't use, everything is working as it should.

I'm a happy camper once again.  :-)

Wendy
