I would like to use the same google account for the google play store on multiple devices so that I can download an application once and install it on multiple devices. Is this possible and have any had any problems ?

If that same google acccount is used to backup multiple devices, won't one device backup overwrite the another device backup ? if so, is there an solution to the problem ?

What is the first google account setup on device used for ?

I use the same Google account on 2 devices, phone and tablet and that gives me access to same apps through playstore also sync's contacts etc.

Not sure what you mean by backup but it doesn't backup the whole system only contacts, calender etc.

No issues with this at all. I run my account on a nexus 4, Samsung galaxy sii and a note as well as my tablet.

Because it syncs with the cloud it records your last change.

I two use same account on multiple devices, the only issue is when an app is compatible with only one device, however when you go to install said app it will let you know what devices it is compatible with, so not really an issue... Just a little annoying if you are expecting to have it on both.

When you look at your Google dashboard you'll see the devices and what data they contain listed separately

There's no problems with data being overwritten

I use my gmail /google account on 3 x tablets, 4 x phones on 4 different providers (3 in NZ and one in Canada) and Google Play just doesn't care.

They all work no matter where I am (in NZ or not) or what device I'm using at the time - or several at the same time.

If there is a limit...I haven't hit it yet.
