Firstly im very new to this and any help is much appriciated. I have brought a samsung s2 from a parallel importer with ithe information as follows and i am wanting to know if its possible and then how to upgrade to a new Android version.

Model: GT-19100

Android Version: 4.0.3

Baseband version: 19100XXLPQ

Kernal version:3.0.15-19100XXLPQ-CL223505se.infra@SEP-94 #3

Build Number: IML74K.XXLPQ

Plug in phone
If update available, install

The easiest thing to do would be to download one of the following and flash it via Odin.

Vodafone NZ
I9100XWLSD (4.1.2)

Telecom NZ
I9100TDVLSH (4.1.2)
http://samsung-updates.com/details/8806/Galaxy_S_2/GT-I9100T/TNZ/I9100TDVLSH.html

This will give you the latest stock software without the need to do anything like root or install a custom recovery. You can of course still do this to the new software if you wish.

I was trying to avoid confusing OP with my clear concise option since they said they were new to it ;) Figured they would scratch head with explaining the ins and outs of odin and flashing if I went into it with too much detail heh

Been a while since I did anything with an S2, but don't you have to flash an insecure kernel via Odin to get root anyway?

By far the easiest method is just to use Kies. The phone appears be running a generic European firmware, and there's definitely a newer version of that available. Hopefully Kies allows it to be installed.

The next best option is to use Odin (v1.85) to flash a newer firmware. It doesn't really matter whether it's one of the NZ variants listed above or a generic Euro version, as they all work, and there is no need to root your phone. The latest Android version available on any official firmware is 4.1.2, and there are signs that this will be it for updates.

The last option (and the least user-friendly) is to go custom. This involves installing a custom kernel + recovery using Odin, running an app called TriangleAway to remove an annoying boot screen, then flashing whatever ROM takes your fancy. Although this is more complicated, you do get access to newer Android versions - at least 4.2.2, if not 4.3.

Thanks for the speedy information guys.

I installed kies but the program will not find any new updates for the phone.

What are the ins and outs of odin is it straight forward enough that i just go ahead and download Vodafone NZ I9100XWLSD (4.1.2) http://samsung-updates.com/details/8648/Galaxy_S_2/GT-I9100/VNZ/I9100XWLSD.html as shown above?

Download the latest version of Odin here: http://samsung-updates.com/Odin307.zip

1. Extract both Odin and the firmware zips into the same folder
2. Put phone into download mode by turning the phone off and then press Vol Down + Home and then Power.
3. Connect phone to PC and run Odin
4. In Odin click the 'PDA' button and select the firmware file you extracted and then click start.
Very important that you don't touch any other settings in Odin.
5. Wait for Odin to finish and your phone should reboot and finish the upgrade to 4.1.2
