I'm looking to upgrade my phone from a 5 year old LG windows 8 phone and wanted to know you guys think is better; the Nexus 5, HTC One or the Galaxy s4? Price isnt too much of a problem, I'm mainly looking for a good quality phone that I could use for everyday things (Such as games, music, internet, calling) and that has a good battery life.

I am leaning towards the Nexus 5 but any help would be appreciated.

all 3 are very good so it will get down to what you like and what suits your needs. Samsung has the benefits of external storage and changeable battery, camera is very good outside but not so inside. The HTC One is a good looking phone made of metal unlike Samsung and has very good speakers, the camera is very good in low light. The Nexus is a no nonsense Google phone with good specs and first to be updated on software.

I'd go to Noel Leemings or the liek and have a look and see what takes your fancy, most on here will just push the phone of their choice and pick holes i the rest as its very subjective but as I said they are all very good.

Out of those 3 I prefer the Nexus 5 myself, love the feel and size of the screen

but then my daily driver is a Nokia Lumia 1520 phablet

Nexus 5 has pretty crap battery life, especially by going off reviews compared to the Galaxy..

Nexus 5 (32gb if you can find one), you will always be up to date with the latest version of Android and won't have problem's with carrier branding and settings.
Ascent have it for $865.47 with 3 years Warranty, but out of stock at the moment.

With the other two you will have to see if there are features you must have, S4 has a IR blaster to turning your TV/aircon off and on, external storage and removable battery etc.

I like the body on the HTC One but never used one to see what they are like.

if you want a good camera, S4 - personally i dont like Samsung Touchwiz UI - too bloated. But the positives are that it has MicroSD and a removable battery..
If you want a good feel phone with good software, HTC One - gotta say, good phone, average camera. It is a deal breaker for some.
If you want pure android experience, Nexus 5 - decent camera and software is clean. I have heard mixed things about battery for this one but I have not used it personally so dont take my word for it.

Yes you would be best to read up on the camera on the HTC One as it uses a 4 ultrapixel camera what there are mix reviews on it, the camera is usually a deal breaker for me and that is why I have not touched one.

Main thing that stopped me getting a Nexus 5 was the lack of a 32GB model in NZ when it was released so went the Note 3 which I am wishing at times I waited until the 32GB Nexus 5 was available.

This S4 is pretty much a Note 3 in an S4 casing, and at this price is too hot to pass up on.

I bought a nexus 5 a couple of weeks ago after having iPhone 3GS & a iPhone 4 for the last four years. I absolutely love the nexus but researched between these 3 options for a couple of months before making my choice. Personal preference can change so many factors that you just gotta go into shops & try to have a go on each phone to see what suits you the most.

Should ask why you're looking at the S4 and not the S5 which has just come out. Also which HTC One? Last year's is the M7 and is quite cheap now, this year's is the M8 which has just come out. Both the newer ones stand at about $1000, give or take. The Nexus 5 is older than the two that have just come out and so it does have slightly less processor power and so on, but it should come in cheap.

If you are planning on keeping your new phone for 5 years like with your old one, I would suggest buying as up to date a phone as possible, as you should enjoy updates and manufacturer support for a longer time. If you buy a year old phone, you effectively take a year off your phone's support life.

After owning a HTC One for nearly a year I'm still liking it too much to want to replace it. twin front facing speakers is something i have become incredibly fond of, likewise being able to convert to pure google rom = Nexus experience in a premium package. The camera is no worse than its competitors, in fact i would rate it somewhere between my previous S3 and Lumia 920

Ok thank you everyone. Quick question, what are the speakers like on the Nexus 5 (compared to, say, an Ipod 5th gen (If you know what their speakers are like))?

Why not consider an LG G2 as well?

Cheaper than all of those, best battery life of any of them. Best camera, fantastic screen and better specs than any, or at least on par with the Nexus 5.

Still a phone that rivals the recent releases of the S5 and M8

In terms of speakers.. Hmm, nothing actually beats HTC One. I personally have an HTC One and cannot rave about the front facing speakers enough. Just a joy to use - handsfree calling..being able to actually hear the ringer in a crowded place! Ahh the joys. You can have a hands-on experience of the Nexus in most 2 degrees stores. The first thing I usually do to test speakers and the screen is to go on Youtube and play the Avengers trailer (or Transformers 3) on HD on the phone. This trailer has a really good sound track that allows you to get most out of the speakers. Give this a shot

Regarding Kopkiwi's comments about LG G2 - yes this is a good phone indeed. I had a bit of play with it and was keen on trying it out. But in the end, the software seemed too annoying for me. It was the animations and cartoonyness of it that put me off. The LG and Samsung phones dont have a very professional look and feel in terms of software. HTC and Nexus clearly have the better software in my opinion at least.
