Hi

I'm planning on getting my partner a new phone for her birthday. I'm looking to spend up to $400 - what is the best android phone available in this price range?

nexus 5....... tis the best for that price.

+1 on the Nexus. S3 is also a good phone, with lots of the newer connectivity features (eg. NFC, Miracast).

Hey man, best for what? Like overall?
The Samsung Galaxy s3 is $389 at Dick Smith.
Quad core, 4.8" HD screen and a decent camera.

Galaxy S4 mini and HTC One mini also come in right around that price. Otherwise, the Moto G is a winner and gives you a decent chunk of change from your $400.

Moto G is worth considering, think it's cheaper than most of those mentioned but not as good looking.

Nexus 5, or Sony Z Ultra if a bigger phone is in order (seen it for $379ish new a couple of times now). Z1 Compact getting down into that kind of price range also.

I'd stay away from the s3 at this point in time. Samsung have stopped updates for it, so it's is going to be stuck on an older version of android (unless your boyfriend roots which is a different story). With the big new android update coming up soon, that is going to become a nuicence.
Like the others mentioned, you can get the N5 for just around $400, it's going to be a lot better than any phones around it's price. Same with the Xperia Z Utra if you want something bigger. Other than that I'll parrot in for the Moto G and Zenphone. The Z ultra and especially N5 blow these out of the water in terms of speed though. They're more similar to the flagship, high end 2014 phones (That's the S5 and 2014 HTC One).

+2 for Moto G - wife loves hers. Stock Android with no bollocks on top, rapid updates - unlike Samsung.

Nexus 5, Moto G, Smart 4 power. All great options - although I'd hang out for the local release of the 4G Moto G rather than the current dual-SIM 3G version.
