Hi guys,
I had an upsetting experience a couple of weeks ago when flying from Auckland to London via Los Angeles.
When I turned my phone on after landing at LAX, it immediately decided to "upgrade" to Android 4.1.2, with no prior notice or other warning. As a result, all my carefully-saved fils I'd set up for the trip disappeared - luckily, the contact details etc re-loaded themselves from Google eventually. But I'm now trying to get over a related issue which is that somehow all my memory is being used and I cannot reload al the original apps I had on it.

I don't know if this has affected anyone else, but it might pay to be very careful ...

What was your device running before as I've been on 4.1.2 for quite some time.

Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat APAC as a Technology Evangelist and Portfolio Architect. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.

Google restricted the ability to move apps to SD card on this version of Android (or was the restriction added in 4.0?)

There are workarounds to do it, some involve rooting your phone. I've heard an app called foldermount being used, but someone else will know more than me.

Hey, I had a similar issue with all memory being used on my S2 recently and found this fix online: Dial *#9900# on your phone (make sure you include the asterisk) and then select the second option which is 'Delete dumpstate/logcat'. This freed up a whole lot of space on my device, I was able to install the updates and I haven't noticed any untoward effects.

Seriously though, why they partitioned the phone to give so little of the memory to the system/apps is beyond me. It has expandable storage, if I need to store more music I can put it there. Giving only 1.97gb out of 16 seems totally counter-intuitive. I have heard that you can repartition, but I don't have root access so it's not an option.
