Hey guys,

I am trying to get rid of the Emergency Calls Only message on my Motorola phone.  I've tried rebooting it, and removed the battery to clean the contacts on the SIM card, but nothing seems to have worked so far.  Can someone please help me?

Is there a SIM card in the handset and if ' Yes ' does that SIM card work in another handset?

Loads of basic fault checking you could do, Process of elimination

try another sim to eliminate the phone or the sim as the issue

There is a SIM in the back of the handset, and I don't have another card to check it with.  I took the SIM out to clean the contacts as mentioned in my topic starter.

well of course you will see that message if there is no sim in the phone, as you can only make emergency calls as your not connected to a network provider

the only way to fault find your issue is either with another hand set or another SIM card as you need to identify which of the 2 is at fault

ok maybe a silly question but are you able to make calls?

I read the OP as its just the message you won't tto get rid of.

When I try to make calls, I get a message saying the mobile network isn't available. And it's not a silly question. :-)

Things to do (if you can):

  • How long have you had this handset and where it comes from?
  • Check you actually have coverage for that network
  • If you can use this SIM card on another handset to see if it works

ok try this?

go to menu -settings -about phone -status
- What does it say under "service state?" It should say "in service."
If this not in service, it means your phone is not registered on a  network. now you can try to rectify this from your device by updating your profile.
-Go o menu -setttings
-about phone -system updates
-update profile

I copied this from another site but seems to be a problem on some phones.

Tried that thanks, but to no avail. I will take it back to the store tomorrow to see what they say. I appreciate all your helpful suggestions. I guess it may be time for a new phone :-)

What about my questions? Is this a new phone? Have you tried entering its IMEI here for checking

Sorry I thought I had answered this earlier.

I bought the phone over two years ago from our local Telecom store.  I will try your last suggestion. :)

OK entered that number and all it told me was that the phone wasn't reported lost or stolen.

you really need a second phone and sim to test with

it sounds like your phone isn't recognizing the SIM hence displaying the emergency call only message as it has no way to connect to a network

you need to put your sim into another phone, and put that other phones sim into your phone. then if the fault moves you know its the SIM and if it doesn't move you know its the phone

I don't have another phone here to test that theory with.  Could try it later with a family members phone.

Is this a spontaneous failure, or have you changed something (eg. new SIM)? Which provider are you with?
