I've been looking for affordable tablets for my nephew, and the one that seemed to stand out the most was the Lenovo A10; from $344 (PB Tech) for a 10" tablet.  Notably, it's a better resolution than most in this cheaper price bracket. I had a play on one in NL's and it appeared pretty good value for the money (my nephew looks like he'll get this).

I haven't read many positive things about the cheaper Samsung tablets.

Whatever you do, a good thing to add to your tablet is Norton Parental Control software - manage how long she can use the tablet, what sites to block/allow, etc...

Anything you can suggest under $200.00. Lenovo A10 is on higher side.

The specs are not amazing, but I greatly prefer the Huawei Mediapad tablets over any of the Lenovo range...

The have better build quality, and better software (nice, useful software customization).
Huawei Mediapad 7 Inch 3G

Huawei Media Pad 10 Inch

They have them on display at Harvey Norman too, so I suggest you go and have a look.
edit: the non 3g versions are cheaper too
