//Hey ya'll, new here.

I have a SOny Z1 thats been cracked right down the screen from the top right to bottom left and has rendered it completely useless. I was so disappointed in myself for buying it as it was from a Facebook buy/sell so it had no warranty (The guy said it came with a warranty but I called up Harvey Norman and they said they can't do anything because it doesn't apply to their product care warranty.) So I'm having a problem, I'm a student who is living on what he can and would like to know the best option money wise as I have the technical ability to fix and repair.

Bif on Trade Me $1 no reserve or pay about $150 to get it repaired (Keeping in mind it has no warranty on it)//

Any apologies if I sound too noob or whatever. Just curious to see what you guys had in mind!

First off - don't ever buy phones off Facebook. It is a terrible idea :)

Repairing the phone is a bit of a task and as you know doesn't come with a warranty. To be honest I would recommend saving up for a proper phone and purchase it from the carrier you're wanting to use it on. That way, warranty, and a working phone.

Yeah I severely regret that decision and have definitely learned my lesson.

Any recommendations on what phone to get preferably cheaply? I have an S4 here that I'm selling to a family member for $300 so around that much would be nice but I can't be too fussy with my money. Ever since I got my S4 2 years ago I haven't kept up with the Phone Biz up until now.

It's all about the risk particularly if you have limited money. We don't know what those parameters are but you seem very happy to take risky options.

The repair might be OK but what happens if it isn't can you then afford to replace? If you can't but can afford to replace now then maybe you should do that.

$150 repair with no recourse/warranty (and no waterproofing if you wanted that)

$300 replace with some recourse e.g. http://www.trademe.co.nz/mobile-phones/mobile-phones/sony/xperia/auction-1076113734.htm

$400 replace with limited warranty on TM

$450 replace from online shop

Thanks that's very useful info, uh one more thing.

It annoys me to no limit that I have a powerful phone here, where all the insides work 100% but the screen is holding its usability back. I will most likely look at listing on Trade Me for $1 no res and get another Z1 because I was practically drooling over it for the 10 minutes I got to use it.. So anyway. Are there any parts inside that I could salvage? Letting a 20mp camera and a snapdragon 800 go seems sad to me :(

If you're going to get another Z1, you can keep your current one for future spares. Or if you're sure you're going to be more careful with the new Z1, I'd recommend selling your current one on Trade Me as faulty/spares, before it's value diminishes any further (Snapdragon 820 phones are already starting to hit the market...).

Also, have you looked at the option of repairing it yourself? A replacement display (LCD+Digitizer+Glass) costs only $50 (add $20-30 extra for front panel).

I had a Z1 with a crack in the screen, and the way the phone is constructed means touch stops working too.

I bought a new screen and digitizer pack from AliExpress, and a back replacement too. The back is glass so will prob crack when pulled off. Took it to a repairer, who does multiple iPhone and Samsungs a day, he managed to repair but it was only temporary, seemed to gradually get worse. ( gap between screen and sidebar, buttons stopping working) Said it was the hardest smart phone he's tried to replace screen for, and wouldn't touch Sony's after that.

I flogged it afterwards for 60 on trademe, fault disclosed.

Can try yourself, just get parts from AliExpress for about $60

Cheers dude Yeah ill probably end up scrapping it on trade me because I got a Vodafone Smart Ultra and selling my s4 to a flatmate so I guess all is good.
