Sorry if this is covered in another topic but what is the best way to synch contacts and calendars between my Vista PC and my new HTC android phone? Thanks.

Yes there is. HTC just released a Sync update for Hero and Magic last week. This will install HTC Sync on your desktop and you can easily sync all info with Outlook.

Thanks for the info. I have installed the software but am having problems. The phone knows it is connected to the PC and the PC knows it is connected to the phone and I have successfully loaded about 3gb of music onto the MicroSD card. The Synch Manager window says "Disconnected" and whilst the "USB connected" symbol appears at the top of the phone screen - and the MicroSD card can be mounted and made accessible to the PC - the HTC Synch icon does not.

Any ideas? I have tried restarting the PC as well as starting the HTC Synch software with the phone connected and disconnected.

Hey. I don't have HTC Magic but I have another HTC model. When I connect the USB cable to my desktop and my phone. I get 3 options on my phone.

1. ActiveSync
2. Disk drive
3. Internet sharing

From your description/problem, It sounds like you might have or are choosing option no 2 which makes your dream a USB drive for you to drag and drop files into. Do you see an option like sync that you can choose on the device?

If this does not works out or no one else replies here,I strongly suggest you head over to xda developers website and choose HTC Dream on the phone list. Ask the same question there and some xda whizz will be able to solve this quickly.

Few folks on geekzone also have a dream so you could wait a while before making an account on xda and asking the same question.

Also try Vodafone NZ forums.

Thanks again Bill.

I have tried reinstalling the siftware and I also found a driver update for 32 bit Vista on the Taiwanese HTC site. Installed that too.

No use. I expect commercialy-supplied products to work immediately and this doesn't. It is just hopeless - to compare with RIM products: I installed the Synch software supplied with my Blackberry and it worked immediately.

Anyway the good news is I have found a product called CompanionLink which works fine. I am using the eval license (14 days free use) and if it continues to work I will buy it.

Personally, I use google cal sync to sync my outlook with my google cal. At home, I sync my mac cal with google, and I get google cal to pull all my facebook events. As the magic has a great google cal application, I use this, and it has everything. Once it is up and running, its simple, you don't need to buy anything, and it just works.
