Less than a week of magic ownership and generally pleased - got my synch problem sorted eventually.

Next frustration is the Android Market. I can run the application but the only apps visible (or searchable) seem to be the free ones. How do you access the "paid for" apps? The Android market website doesn't ofer a lot of help on this either. This begs the qesution as to whether the Market is actualy available in NZ yet ...

My other issue is that having installed the (free) "Documents to go" application i still can't open Msoft Office files.

I wouldn't rate Android highly on user friendlines so far ....

Any ideas?

Google has not granted us NZ'er access to the paid applications on the market place, nor updates to some free google applications. A month or so ago I asked Vodafone, and they were not sure when it would happen. Hasn't happened yet. There is another thread on this subject.

Hi there,

I've asked several people at Google and all they can tell me is "not yet".

Sorry, I'm hoping we can put a bit more pressure on them to grant access to the paid apps as soon as possible.

Thanks for taking an interest.

This may be a fine example of "caveat emptor" but I had no idea the Android Market was not available to NZ users and had I known I probably wouldn't have bought the phone.

On the subject of support do you know anyone or have anyone on staff at Vodafone who really knows this phone and the Android environment? I tried Mobile Mentors but they were pretty apathetic.

Hi goethe, I have had my HTC Magic a few weeks now - albeit Vodafone AU, and I love it. We get both paid/ non-paid app's here :-)

Caveat emptor is somewhat tempered in New Zealand by the Consumer Guarantees Act.

If the store was part of the sales pitch (by the retailer) then there may be a remedy under the act.

(Merely stating that fact - I am not in any way implying the retailer/packaging etc mentioned access to paid apps etc).

The Market place was indeed part of the sales pitch on the Vodafone site when I bought mine. However, there is infact a market place. It is just that not all the apps are on the market place - some updates, such as the 3.1 update to google maps and all paid apps are missing.

Might be hard to argue a case under the CGA. (IANAL)

You can access the paid version of the Android market if you are willing to enable root access on your HTC magic. Once enabled you can run "Android Market Enabler" (first link in a google search) which changes settings to provide access to the paid market.

Once you've done that, on a PC based browser register for "Google Checkout" and add a credit card there. You cannot do this from the android web browser for some reason.

With those steps completed you can purchase apps from the Android Market, or download things like the Google Maps update.

Thanks for all the replies.

I just saw a review of the HTC Magic by Scott Bartley which says all Android Market apps are available so it seems i am not the only one who hadn't worked this out.

Back at "Docs to Go" --- anyone know how to make this work??
