I own a Vodafone HTC Magic (bought here in NZ - not imported) and was wondering when the Android v1.6 update will be rolled out..  (figure it shouldn't be far away considering T-Mobile in USA has already released this OTA last weekend)

Anyone got information on this?  Will it be OTA?

Cheers
Matt

I hope I'm wrong, but NZ telco history of OS updates for PDA/Smartphones tells us that you might wait for a period of between one year and never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever.

I would suggest that a mod might move this to the Vodafone forum for you, seeing as it is a Vodafone specific query.

Thanks for your reply Tony

I thought this would be separate to my carrier - though the phone is branded Vodafone the update simply is delivered over the internet/wifi so didn't expect vfnz would be responsible for this

I have asked vodafonenz on twitter but he didn't know - figured that geekzone members often have the info

If it's carrier specific, I would have expected that Vodafone would know all about it. I don't know much about Android sorry.

With Windows Mobile, users were (still are really), dependant on the carrier providing a release. Which often, just didnt happen.

Hopefully with Android being more open than WM, users are not plagued by such problems!

Android is open in the sense that anyone can contribute to the project. But it is still closed. Just read how this week Google demanded alternative ROMs be pulled oof of the Internet. Microsoft never did this with WM ROMs.

In Google's defense, they are only asking that their closed source applications are removed from the custom ROMs

Stupid move on Google's part as it's drawn a lot of negative attention and users of these custom ROMs will simply install the apps manually regardless

Anywho... To keep the thread on topic, anyone heard about when/if the Vodafone HTC Magic will receive the Android 1.6 update?

Okay

VodafoneNZ just tweeted this:
"google tells me 1.6 upgrade will be a: over the air and b: in NZ in the next couple of weeks. It gets pushed out so you'll just get it."
http://twitter.com/vodafoneNZ/status/4690082184

So sounds like it will be on it's way soon :)

Beat me to it...

Google says "in the next couple of weeks" and it'll be OTA.

Cheers

You can always text the word "bal" to 777 and save yourself the phone call.

This confirms that updates, like Android Market, are a Google thing...and an outsourced service to the telcos. For a telco, that would be a compelling service offering in many ways. Just sell the phones, clip the ticket on the traffic - calls and data - and the logistical and software support is provided by the phone's OS maker and the app developers.

Cyanogen is sorting out a relatively painless method of adding the Google apps after applying his mod'd ROM to a phone. Analogous to linux users having to install all the restricted software (various MM codecs, libdvdcss2) after installing the OS itself. Other mods (like RA-ION?) still have the Google apps.....for now.

Hmm..

http://androidandme.com/2009/10/carriers/more-info-on-the-sprint-ota-problem/

Sounds like Sprint are responsible for rolling out the update for their customers, as were T-Mobile

I hope this doesn't mean we'll be waiting for VodafoneNZ to organise the update... Any info on this Paul?

Vodafone UK was supposed to starting their upgrades this week sometime. I can see scope for delays. No need to panic just yet. We're still just inside the window of expectation ( couple of weeks) set by Paul B on the 8th. If it was another week or so, I wouldn't be surprised.

I'm in no rush. Any update will break some apps. The longer we wait, the fewer apps get broken 9as they are being updated all the time).
