Is it a simple drag n drop from Windows like any removable storage, or is it the rather less elegant solution a la iTunes style software?

It's drag and drop. Although I think you could use some sort of media management software, but why would anyone do that when drag and drop is so perfectly easy!

You can get files on and off your Android phone by a variety of means.

1. USB-connected drag / drop of files
2. FTP from the phone to a server and download them. (Andftp free app)
3. FTP *to* the phone and upload them. (SwiFTP free app)
4. eStrongs File Managar (free app) to access Windows / samba file shares via Wifi to a LAN. Also does ftp.
5. Bluetooth file transfer to / from the phone. (Bluetooth File Transfer free app_

....and....

6. "bt" bittorrent client for downloading torrents to your phone (not perfect, but appears to work for small files at least)

There are others (http download, email attachments, MMS attachments - depends on the requirement).....I mainly use the first 5 methods above.

I've just been reading about a few different options on Lifehacker about how to do this with your music.

The one that i'm most interested in at the moment is doubleTwist (how to do it here), but there are a few others also. Some sync with iTunes if that's your flavour, and others just mount the device autmatically for you.

God, this sounds great. IPhone's solution is horrendous, big bloated POS iTunes is.

My one pet peeve with an otherwise excellent device.

iTunes (and the walled garden it enforces) is the main reason I didn't buy an iPhone and went to Android instead.

Android is - as of v2.1 - more or less what the iPhone could have been....but isn't.

Plus the ability to swap batteries and sdcards was compelling. Having to send the iPhone / iPod Touch in for repairs to get a new battery is completely unacceptable to me.

I did buy an iPod Touch so I could stay in contact with the Apple-verse....It taught me what it would be like to have to rely on the Apple Store and iTunes.....and I'll go no further. That culture and eco-system isn't one I want to buy into any more than the minimum.

If you want to be really hard-core you can even install the dev tools and use commandline to "push" files to the phone. (adb push * /sdcard/)

iPhone is a nice device although one of its biggest strengths - it's straight-forward accessibility, is also IMO it's biggest weakness, lack of flexibility, which Android offers in spades. For someone who likes to muck about with stuff as much as me, my HTC Hero is a lot of fun, and is very functional.

Also, Android devices come without the Apple Tax. If you are running OS X though then Double Twist has a few android-specific features built into it, not sure if they've got that in the Windows version yet.
