Hi Guys,

I'm looking to purchase a cheap (around $500 NZ) Android phone, preferably running 2.1, but otherwise something that can be upgraded easily. Really after a camera with flash, a 3 inch or so touchscreen and wifi. Any suggestions? The galaxy spica on vodafone nearly fits this, but won't work on XT. Also open to installing android on a win mobile phone for any phones that have been proven to taking this. Thanks so much for your time :)

Pop into Parallel Imported or similar and have a look at what they offer. You might be surprised at how many choices you either have or don't have.

Yeah, check out the HTC Desire Telstra edition(although semi expensive)

Then LG GW620F is compatible with XT but still on 1.5 unfortunately(about the cheapest at $699)

hopefully a few more will come out, but we'll have to wait and see, might be a few others people can recommend also

Motorola Milestone is another, but not cheap at $999, 1st July 2010 it should be out officially on XT

Thanks guys. yeah I'd love a desire, but een the LG is a bit of a stretch in terms of price. I just can't justify dropping more than about $500 on a phone at the moment. I guess I'm looking for a lower end handset, vodafone seems to have these in spades (or is at least compatible with them) but the 850mhz spectrum seems to be extremely limited for good phones. If it wasn't for keeping my number and $6 calling to 2 nominated numbers (both of which are telecom) i would have jumped ship long ago so I can get a decent phone at a decent price.

What about the optimus, it has a Telstra OZ (850mhz) version being realased on the 1st July - still a bit expensive at 500AU

Vodafone is selling their version in NZ for $399 RRP. at 399 I think it's a good deal

Optimus looks real good, but surely the vodafone one will be the 900mhz version. Are there any sites here that have a large selection of 850mhz phones? Otherwise maybe i'll have to import a telstra phone.

have you tried looking up (google) parallel imported mobile phones?

there are a lot of companies out there and many will go out and source the phone you are after and match any advertised price while they're at it.

Don't think so.

"Network Band    GSM 850, GSM 900, GSM 1800, GSM 1900, 3G 900, 3G 2100"

3G only on 2100 so a little limiting outside the metro areas..

Damn. seems impossible to get a good android phone on xt without breaking the bank. Maybe i'll have to be patinet, and hope that telstra brings out some more android phones.

Try this one:
http://www.chinavasion.com/product_info.php/pName/excalibur-3g-android-32-inch-touchscreen-cellphone/

I just landed it last week and it works well on both XT and Vodafone/2degrees although more suited to XT as it does 850 3G.  Landed it for just over $500NZ direct ordered from the supplier.  They are currently listed on trademe although at $100 more and still drop shipped from China anyway.  Takes about 4-5 days delivery.  Pretty bad that the seller on trademe is obviously not in possesion of the goods, just drop shipping and taking a margin.

So far so good with the phone.  I used it for a business trip down South and it worked fine for email etc.  Ton's of apps out there for your to install.

Cheers
Andy
