Hey guys

I have a galaxy s from expert infotech and i'm pretty sure its a singapore one. Anyways still haven't got gingerbread even though my mate who's one is a nz one has already got it. I thought for sure that my one was going to get it first.

so what should i do? how can i get 2.3 ?
i'm pretty noob with this android stuff. just came from symbian so still learning the ropes of android

what happens if i do the *#272*imei# thing and change it there? will that work?

any help would be appreciated

From what I understand the only OTA updates for Gingerbread are for the Nexus S (Samsung) and Nexus One. I got GB over for air for my N1 about a month ago I think.

Perhaps you need to find the ROM online and load it yourself?

OTA only I think if the vendor of your phone or your Telco pushes it out to your phone. In Google's case, they can push out the update to their phones (Nexus S or Nexus One).

For other branded phones, either the Telco can push it out or the vendor. For Samsung phones I think you use Kies software. But for the Galaxy S I am not sure there's even an official Froyo release available for the phone (well there isn't for the Telecom one). I am waiting for a semi-official Froyo for the Galaxy S.

According to this:

The 2.3 update started rolling out around 6 weeks ago in Europe & England, so try updating Kies and plug the phone in and see if it finds anything. I don't believe Samsung do _any_ OTA updates, it all relies on Kies.

Otherwise you could do it manually by downloading the firmware and using recovery to flash it, I wouldn't recommend it unless you're confident though.

My late manufactured unlocked handset was 2.2 out of box (GT-9000I) from DSE (aus, but same source as nz) And Kies was updating most to that also.

As posted, some VFNZ (see generic I9000 thread) have had 2.3 rolled out to them already via Kies.

However I too am sitting in wait for my model string to be added to the deployment list and it to light up and say 'new update available!'

Not too keen to go the non official route at this point to keep my sanity.

I think he means look at the baseband version and report it.

IE Mine is from aussie (DSE) and is a Optus built but unlocked one. Being a GT9000DTJP3 DT being optus, JP3 being the firmware.

Yes that's helpful. It tells me that there appears to be an official update for the VF modem model but it's not clear that there is one for the Telecom model. I will check when I next get hold of the phone from my colleague to see if Kies finds an update.

[EDIT]

Installed Kies and while it found the phone okay, it did not find any firmware upates OTA. Guess I am going to have to do it manually.

OK. I was going to try to do the 2.3.3 update on a Telecom phone from this link

However I got cold feet since it says it will remove all data from the phone to backup everthing.

This user does not have a SD card installed and nor does he create contacts on Google (they are either SIM, Phone or Outlook). So I was apprehensive that when the phone is flashed and all data lost, he will lose all his phone contacts. I did do a backup of the contacts to a 00001.vcf file but that went to the internal phone memory which I think would be trashed by the update.

I am about to purchase a SD card and see if I can backup the contacts to that. All apps I presume can be downloaded again from the Market and he has no photos or music that I am aware of.

Does this sound correct?
