I have problem where i cannot still upgrade my galaxy s to the 2.3 Gingerbread OS through Samsung Kies. I am with Vodafone and I heard the updates are only release through the carriers but i cannot update mine. Is there another simpler way to do this other than the flashing the rom techniques.

Then its not really a Vodafone handset. So Kies will only update when the provider upgrades.

So no, theres no easy way out.

You'll have to root and flash the device.

Not related to Vodafone NZ if the handset is a import

Root and Flash - Its pretty easy and you get to ditch any telco cruft thats on there. Have a look at:

Our Telecom agent upgraded one of ours to 2.3.3 with the official ROM so it has the Telecom apps on it etc. He used Kies. It seemed to work but now we can't connect the phone to our Exchange server! Might require a factory reset or something since his upgraded preserved all the phone settings.

We went from a leaked 2.3 ROM to an official one.

That's terrible. I don't like any of the solutions on offer in those threads. I don't want to root the phone or try to install an older email.apk.

I guess I could ask Telecom to put back an older ROM that they put on before but that one caused wifi connection problems. Still it's a small price to pay versus no Exchange access.

This doesn't appear to have been suggested for this particular issue (2.3.3 upgrade) but when I upgraded to the unofficial Telecom 2.2 some while back I had the same problem with connecting to Exchange Server.  Quite randomly (as suggested by "bungknees") what fixed it was to connect to Exchange Server for the first sync via wifi rather than via 3G.  Absolutely no rhyme nor reason that I could ascertain, but it worked, and I never had a sync problem thereafter (either on wifi or 3G).

It may be worth giving that a go if you haven't already.  I should add that my upgrade to 2.3.3 (flashed with Odin because I was upgrading from the unofficial 2.2) has caused me absolutely no problems with Exchange syncing at all - so I haven't had to try this approach myself!

I have a Telecom Galaxy GT-I9000T on Eclair.

Kies does not recognise it, it never has. I copy stuff onto it via Linux.

I dont want to ROOT it, its my wifes phone.
I would like to upgrade to 2.3

Is there a reason why Kies does not recognise it? I have removed all the music off it because I had been told there could be issues with file names that are too long or having too many mp3's on it.

Is this all urban legend or based on fact?
I also turned off my Anti Virus software.

I get the really helpful dialog box:

Reconnect the device in Samsung Kies (PC Studio)
mode. Current Connection mode not supported by Kies.

Any ideas?
I cant be the only person with this problem.

Cheers

Settings - Wireless and networks - USB Settings

Change mode to samsung kies mode.

If you are in MSD/USB mode kies will not work.

There is no USB Settings under Settings - Wireless and networks on 2.1 ( Eclair) , well not on this phone.

Ah.. Whoops :) never had 2.1 myself. How about USB debug mode in advanced settings.

Or 3. Select Samsung Kies under Settings > Connectivity > USB > Samsung Kies

Ok, this looks promising. USB settings is under. "About phone"

Classic....

They are not winning any points for useability here.

Thanks for the help.
