"Sky TV said total subscriber numbers fell from 852,679 to 816,135 in the six months to December 31. Its net profit fell 32 per cent to $59 million and revenues were down 3.7 per cent at $458m."

That's about 5% drop in subscribers - how long can that last?

Must mean another price hike?

I recall that last year Sky said that the price increase covered about half of the increased sports and other costs - so I'm guessing that prices will go up by about the same amount this year.

hopefully they can pack up soon and stop messing up NZ's broadcasting rights system with their exclusivity deals. The world has changed, no one needs Sky anymore, it's time they went away...

Yeah, still gutted that Netflix has House of Cards exclusively, and Star Trek and The Crown. And that Amazon - what is it with exclusivity for The Grand Tour? Or that the Big Bang Theory is only on TVNZ.

Amazing how these exclusivity deals are perpetuated the world over - broadcast and streaming. Even the streaming giants are guilty of it. Why? They want you to subscribe and content is king.

Yeah, Sky is the only provider that has exclusive deals....

I guess if Sky folded, the very high rights costs of sport will be paid by new provider(s), and it will off course be free

Free maybe but subsidised by Taxpayers. NZ doesn't have FTA competition to fund sports rights so either you pay for what you watch or you tax for it (and of course those who want it free want other taxpayers to pay for it)

The only other option is to increase advertising or ppv stuff like box-office. Anything will be counterproductive from the perspective of deterring new customers or tipping existing customers over the brink. I fall into the latter group.
I'm not sure how the infrastructural costs stack up for satellite vs terrestrial vs online. I'm assuming satellite isn't cheap, but it obviously had the widest reach. The tie-up with Vodafone may signal a shift to the online side of delivery. But NZ's already creaking broadband would probably fail under the increased traffic. We aren't due fibre until mid 2019 despite being in a large metropolitan area.

Sky forecast this drop last year. Some of the loss could be seasonal and post RWC. Sky is clearly looking at repositioning and that is why they are interested in Vodafone. It would be bad for Sky to leave the NZ market as there are no viable replacements in the short or medium term. The Sky/Vodafone merger needs to be allowed to proceed.

I think the medium for delivery becomes important here. If the medium is in someway "universal" (and online just about covers that) then I think the fact you would now have the option to opt in on the content you want that no, people would not complain. Fanpass are proving this with their SkySports option.

Yep, and like the evidence shows for the streaming giants, churn is huge. Sky has said that half of the customer loss is attributable to the churn on Fanpass and Neon. People choose to watch what they want and then switch off for a few months until something of interest comes back again.

Overseas surveys show that 50% of people that subscribe will be there less than 1 year. Netflix no longer reports churn but its estimated as high. In some reports natural churn on streaming services can be 7% per month. Ouch. Hard to keep the customer unless you keep adding more and more and more exclusive content.

Its cost. Sport costs bigly. No matter who runs sport it has to be charged for. Whether its Sky, Red Cross or the Tamaki Church, it will still cost a lot to provide sport

And its all abpout sport as Sky doesnt really compete with anyone, its channel range is wide and small. Not a lot of Sky TV series or movies. Maybe they should charge sport what it costs and reduce Basic

Sky need to get smarter with their offerings.

Let people choose what channels they get and charge accordingly.

I'm kind of interested in Soho, but refuse to pay close to $50 for the basic package, then $10 for Soho , then another $10 for HD.

May be something like $10 for the first channel, then $9 for the second, $8 for the third etc.

And allow you to drop a channel through online tools, rather than have to call.

And drop the HD charge , or just make it another $1 per channel.

Kodi and its like are so super simple should your conscience allow.

I'm sure some peoples 'morals' have a price, and current Sky charging will tip some people over to Kodi

I'm just gutted every time Sky gets an exclusivity deal, it means on demand of that content is SD, unavoidable adds if Program is on Zone, and to add to that Sky is 4 to 5 times the price of other services and it's Presentation of content is lower quality.
