Can anyone recommend someone good/a good company in Christchurch for installing new coax cabling in pre existing walls?

Have tried replacing some old RG59 cabling with new RG6 myself to a corner against the outside of the house. Met a few obstacles trying to pull the new cable up into the attic space. I tied the new to the old (clearly not well enough) to snake it through but came apart, so now I have no way of pulling anything through from either end.

I have the cable, compression tool and f connectors etc, but not really much use if the cable isn't in the wall! Hoping a professional might have a few extra gadgets to make this all possible.

Any help appreciated.

Hi there,

Have you tried a string with 6inches of chain on the end to get back down the wall? If your lucky you can jingle it down a wall if you have lost use of existing draw wires.

what size are the holes you are trying to get back down?

Yea that could be a goer. I use a small copper weight on builder's string. Is it on an external wall? If so, what is your house made of? If you have bricks there is a cavity between the bricks and wood framing. You can sneak a string with a weight on down the breather holes on the outside.

Yes it is an external wall and yes the house is made from brick.

The thing is though, when trying to pull the old cable out I also had it attached to string. There seemed least one part that it was quite tight to pull it through, as though there was a small hole that the cable had passed through. I'm not sure I would be able to dangle anything down from above and manage to pull it through the hole in the wall.

Definitely worth a try though.

Because it is brick you will be sweet as. Go outside and look for at the top of the wall for the breather holes. Get some builder's string and a small weight. Poke it in the wall and let it slide down. Might need a bit of jiggling to get past bits of mortar and stuff. Once it is on the ground go inside to the flush box and fish it out. It will be behind the building paper so a small rip will be needed to get in to the right cavity. Now you have a string from the top to the bottom =) Now grab your drill and drill up in to the roof cavity and the breather hole. should just be a thin bit of fibrelite which is quite tough to get through so a sharp drill bit really helps. Poke the cable up that hole and run it to where you want it. Then measure off enough length to get down the wall. Tape it, TIGHTLY, on to the string and feed it down the wall. Pull on the string at the flush box and you will be away laughing.

I've had a look and understand what you mean about the breather hole and the building paper etc. I don't have anything on hand small enough to fit through the gap in the bricks that is also heavy enough to drop down so will have to go find something.

Thanks for the pointers so far. If I can get this done will probably still come back to clarify how to get to it from up in the roof space

I wouldn't have a clue. From in the roof space the wall I'm trying to get to is over by the edge of the house where the roof slants quite a bit so is really difficult to get far enough to see down the wall.
From in the house I initially tried pushing the cable through the flush box gap up through the wall, while also going back up in the attic and pulling the string that was already there and tied onto the new cable, but kept getting snagged on pink batts somewhere close to the flush box.

So I imagine the original holes may be quite small and tricky to find. So unless someone has some bright idea how to get through it, using the breather hole in the brick outside could be the way to go. Of course I still then have to get that through the roof into the attic.

Yeah going down the bricks will probably be easiest, if the string and weight doesn't work the plastic straps used to join plywood flooring together works well I find

Of course I still then have to get that through the roof into the attic.

All you do is poke a whole bunch of cable up in to the soffit and then get something to hook it across to the part of the ceiling you can crawl up to.

Problem solved.

I ended up cutting a hole in the wall and building paper from inside the house, and passing a wire I had down between the bricks and building paper. It was in effect what was suggested here, only from the inside not outside. I couldn't find anything small enough yet heavy enough to fit between the breathing gap in the bricks and get it to drop down that space. As it is that gap was about 25cm off to the side from the flush box anyway.

Going from inside the house also meant I was able to poke the cable up into the roof space without drilling anywhere. The hole in the wall is easily plastered back up, and in time that wall will be repainted under EQC repairs anyway.

Cheers for the suggestions, it steered me in the right direction.
