I never actually asked for a sdoc. The plug was a Chinese one anyway which didn't really bother me because I just wanted more wire than the pathetic length on the listing. But as I ended up opening them all to hear shrink the crimps the $6 each for more wire was not really worth it

Thanks for the opinion.

Looking at the inside of the unit.... do you think the floodloght was OK, but was just bodged by the selller adding the extra wire, or do you think the whole unit was iffy when shipped from the factory and therefore best avoided?

The price is certainly pretty competitive if it comes with a SDOC (and the SDOC is genuine!).... but if it is tat, then it is a waste of money.

What is your honest opinion?

I'm not sure if the cable was added in nz or china. Haven't bought any with the short cable to compare.

I don't know what it is with China and putting stupid short cables on things. I got some sealed waterproof in ground lights that have about 100mm of cable on them to nothing. So I have to mess about doing a waterproof termination on that if I want to use them and since it would be in concrete will be a prick of a thing if it fails. It it was either not sealed with resin or had a couple of meters of cable to make it to a jbox somewhere it would be fine.

And IP cameras. FFS how are you supposed to put those onto the end of some cat6 on a surface run.

richms: No, but if I can spend $6 and get enough cable to get to a j box without having to stuff around opening up the lamp and attaching a longer cord then its money well spent IMO.

I put up the Phillips sensor twin-LED just recently, its only 20W or so but really good light and seems brighter than the neighbour's standard 200W one. Ran some cable directly into the ceiling at about 75deg angle from the outside wall location so theres no exposed cable anywhere. Sparkie put the switch for it onto the distribution board. I did find it tends to light up the bedroom window directly below it, so taped a bit of black plastic around the lights to focus the beam a bit more.

Time to find a new industry!

You can either push a jack through a hole in the wall (not recommended) or direct-attach a Cat6 plug, so theres no need for a patch cable at all. Generally best to avoid surface runs for anything security related, but sometimes theres no choice.

The Cat6 plug is the one with the plastic insert inside the plug.

Time to find a new industry!

That would be nice. But they have a shortish length of whatever wire with a giant lump on the end with a rj45 socket. So needs a 22 mm hole in whatever it's going on to push that into.

If it's on a pergola or something then the only solution is a jbox on the back side of the camera to take the excess cable and the giant lump of a socket. Some of them put the POE regulator in the lump. Cat6 is too thick to fit thru the ball joint but I did manage to get 2 pairs thru and move the giant lump to inside the housing which was considerably bigger than needed.
