I think it was a good move by sky not to win the bid for this, especially at a time when competition in the content market is being looked at by regulators. Apparently sky weren't even the 2nd highest bidder for it, that was Sommet sports. So if sky really wanted it, they could have paid the amount I think. I think it has got the coverage they wanted too, in terms of the media portraying more competition in the content market. But really that competition is only on the fringes with the less popular sports.

drquack32: As a referee in New Zealand who has refereed internationally, I can tell you I am not overly happy about this decision. (my background http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Kerr_(referee) )

The game in NZ gets very little coverage unfortunately. That's no ones fault and am not going to blame anyone but the reality is, in NZ, football does not rate highly. Now there is one way I get my fix and that's from Sky Sport or more specifically, MySky. For me, it allows me to watch games, watch incidents of note, review, learn, dissect and also incorporate these things into my game so what I am giving players/fans/stakeholders in the game, a better experience whereby I am not the focal point. Lets face it, who really likes the referee getting involved in the game unnecessarily?

Working in IT, I know how to get all of this if I want to but the reality is, can I be bothered? I have it all in one place and all I have to do is press record. Now I've got to get extra cash, pay for this, hook up that etc etc and I have to ask, can I actually be bothered?

I have no doubt at all that this is the way of the future and it is the start but I also question from a technical standpoint and volume of audience, is the market in NZ ready for this? I am not so sure.

If the NFl game pass and similar are anything to go by, this service should be perfect for you.

Access to all the games, not just the ones sky chooses to show.
Ability to watch multiple games at once
No need to remember to record games
Great time stamping type features so you can easily skip to different in game events (e.g. Goals, free kicks, penalties, corners, yellow cards etc) a wealth of game stats
Ability to watch on multiple devices, not just the tv. You can watch whilst sitting on the toilet or in the garden on an ipad for example, or at a friends house.

Whether they end up with all those features remains to be seen of course....

Main downside is the extra cost, but really if you are a big footie fan $150 per year doesn't seem a lot to pay for all that extra stuff.
Only other downside is that the games disappear after a week, which for most people won't matter, although I can see how that might be annoying for you.

I see Telecom are announcing something this afternoon, rumoured to be free access to online EPL games for telecom customers on some plans:

Hmm, it'd be kind of an odd model to launch a pay TV subscription for $150 and then strike a partnership that gives a large swathe of your potential customers free access via their ISP.

I cannot see it being totally free, T/Com will likely zero rate the content for customers and they may get a couple of games a week for free, or get a discount on the packages offered by EPL.

But what ever the outcome, it does mark the start of T/Com getting into content provisioning (even if it just repackaging)

Still not happy with this, more money for similar content and less accessible. Bah I say... BAH!

I suspect telecom would be paying the rights holder for it, but at a cheaper rate, as they would make it back on selling a fixed 12 month contract to people.

Does make me wonder though why ISPs don't start bidding for these things.

Makes things more and more complex (and more expensive) and people start expecting these services to work flawlesly.

These days I'd rather my ISP be a dumb pipe. I don't need my ISP for domains, email, hosting, TV services etc. all I need is a pipe for my bits.

Not zero rated, no. But Telecom are upping and have recently upped the data allowances on plans (e.g. I've just gone from 120 to 150Gb)

Sounds like a good deal for people not on Telecom who may wish to switch. Looks like I have a choice to make as in a good piece of timing my 12 month contract with Vodafone ends on 8th August which is 9 days before the season starts (due to moving out of flatting and starting my own power/internet accounts at the beginning of August last year) so I could switch for this without breaking contract. I currently get 50Gb for $85 a month so if I could switch to the Telecom 80Gb plan for a similar deal and get the EPL for free then that would be great as I'd definitely be paying the $150 anyway. Of course I have some good calling deals included with Vodafone too (5 free "best mate" numbers which we can call unlimited for free which we make plenty of use of since our families are all in other cities) so that's also a consideration. Looks like Telecom have some national calling plans included in their deals.
