Siouxie Wiles discussed this the other day. She said you could bring the groceries in and leave them for 3 days if you didn't have any bleach to spray the outside.

But then one of the Princess ships had virus detected after 17 days so 3 days doesn't seem long enough.

But really if there's virus on the outside packaging, all you need to do is wash your hands after handling, and before eating. That has been shown to be really effective in clinical settings to stop getting the infection, and the viral load is way higher there.

neb: Gaah, are we going to US-style partisan/muckraking reporting now? They didn't renege on anything, they were informed that they were mistaken and complied with the requirements. Or is it just that the journalist doesn't understand what "renege" means?

I guess saying they got slapped by the government isn't considered professional?

Thanks for that. Wasn't sure what to think, as while it makes sense, Ive not seen any mention anywhere. Spraying bleach it is.

I support them being open if the alternative is people who smoke, going without cigarettes. I say this as someone who thinks smoking is a filthy habit and believe it shouldn't be allowed.

I'd also recommend against trying to quit in the middle of a stressful pandemic. Quitting smoking for most people is very hard. Most people do not need *more* hard in their lives right now, and we don't want additional social stressers to people who are in confined spaces with others.

In other words, face one challenge at a time.

oh dear, so sorry, herbal remedy it is then, though I personally think spliff might be a better choice to inhale.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Except what do you do with store brought fruit and veges, that has been sent to you, including apples where you eat the skin/outer packaging? Should we wash them in soapy water like our hands? Supermarkets seem like to put plastic packing around some fruit and veges these days, so maybe they are going to be doing that from now on, but guessing they are still touched before it goes into that packing? I do wonder how high the actual risk is of being infected this way, because how infectious is this?

Well, I'm not aware of any shortage of fags, but the greatly increased mortality in men in China has been blamed on their smoking habits.

And there is a thought that vaping also greatly increases your risk, so cold turkey won't kill you but impaired pulmonary defences ...

We don't have any reports of people being infected by fomites in this fashion.

But there's nothing to stop you washing everything with a detergent. This creates a surfactant around the virus dislodging it from the surface of your item and allows it to be sent to Wellington's highly efficient waste water systems.

Even though pets aren't likely to be able to be infected, it's probably not a good idea to let a neighbour's pet in your house or pat someone else's dog if you're out for a walk etc.

To be fair, you shouldn't be close enough to pet anyone's anything :)

Yup. For sure it's a possible infection route. Any surface could be.

It takes time to actually do all the tests and analysis to find out - you could for example conclude that after washing by some method, something tested positive because there was still RNA, but the virus may have been inactivated, so you'd need to test by culturing a sample in vitro - it's not something easy to do.

Absence of evidence (of risk) doesn't mean evidence of absence (of risk).
