anyway back to the OP question - i had always thought a BMW handled better, cheaper to buy, is more reliable and is cheaper to service than an Audi, although the Audi "may" be more comfortable ... that was my original reply that started all this awd slog

I find the audi's nicer looking..is why I'm getting one of those.  I did like the 335i from BMW, but found the audi *b8 onwards) more visually appealing.

Also when looking for NZ new wagons as I was, it was very, very hard to find a high spec NZ New BMW wagon.  Quite a few imports but the only NZ tended to be sedans.  But I was generally only looking for a 330 or 335 to compare.

ilovemusic: reviews - depends on what model you are interested in.

search websites of major uk car mags like autocar, auto express, car, evo etc.

uk 'cos their spec is closest to what we get in nz.

if you google haldex you'll find they are basically fwd until the front wheels lose traction and the system shifts drive (via hydraulic pump on early systems, latest uses an electro-hydraulic system and reacts much faster).

haldex and torsen are two systems.

haldex is teh half-witted part-time hydraulic system.

torsen is a mechanical torque sensing system.

as i said earlier your old soob was more sophisticated.

subaru (and mitsubishi) were true leaders in awd tech with things like limited slip diffs and torque vectoring a good decade or so before the europeans.

having owned a few of the above my personal preference in sporty cars is for a good two-wheel drive.

;)

I am not sure if you are suggesting that BMW X-Drive is bad or Audi isn't as good as Subaru, but as someone who has owned 3 high end Subaru's, 2 high end Audis' and a BMW Non X-Drive, I can tell you this:

The Audi handles a LOOOOOOTTTTTTTT better than any of the Subaru's I have driven. Between the GT-B Spec I had, and the S4 v8, the major difference was handling, but it was different planet better.
The RWD 335i I drive now handles better than both of them on flat dry surfaces and is more stable for that type of cornering, but has too much torque.
The Audi is superior overall in handling because it handles uneven surfaces CONSIDERABLY better than any other car I've driven (Excluding 200K + Supercars).

I have not driven a X-Drive yet, but the interior and feature sets of a BMW are compelling with things like HUD, and the iDrive system.

As an Avid 4 Rings fan, I am really struggling because on paper, the BMW xDrive 330 is better.

i'm saying back in the day subaru's awd systems were much more sophisticated than the euros.

a legacy is no handling benchmark.

look instead to a one of the specialised impreza sti models.

before my last sojourn offshore i had an '04 sti spec c - in more or less stock form.
lightweight with stripped out interior, twin scroll turbo, mechanical front and rear lsds, user adjustable torque split and a mild ecu remap for nz 98 fuel - meant this thing could easily out-run and out-handle  any bmw/audi.
it would fail on creature comforts, nvh, interior design and build quality but its dynamics were world beating.

evo magazine thought it good enough to take on the bmw m3 csl and porsche 911gt3

as an "avid 4 rings fan" try the b8 s4 supercharged v6.
the revised (now rearward biased) quattro system almost eliminates the nose-heavy feel of most audis and captures most of the feel of the older b7 rs4.
many audi fans consider the v6 s4 to be better than the latest b8 rs4.

It's it expensive to service an rs4?

the old v8 rs4 - yes !!!

don't know about the first gen twin turbo v6 rs4 or the latest v8 rs4

consumables like oil, brake pads, rotors will make your eyes water.
a regular inlet de-carbonisation (the v8 uses a direct fuel injection system which is prone to leave huge carbon buildup in the inlet manifold, removal is a time consuming - read expensive- manual job) will have you crying into your schnapps.
think around $2k every 20,000km or so depending on use.

compare that with my old sti spec - $200 or so every 6 mths for an oil change service.
