There was a top gear Australia episode comparing walkinshaw hsv Commodore on 20 vs 22" wheels. The 20" had way more grip around their track resulting in a iirc 2s faster time. 2s is a lot on a short track.

joker97: I wouldn't go much more beyond 18 if i were you. Unless your wife is Susie Wolff there is no need for more grip than 18". The sacrifice of extremely harsh ride and loud road noise would drive me insane. I'm not Susie however.

Yeah, 18" is the target. Having said that, all 3 of the ones she drove had the 19" and she was fine with the ride comfort.

They do on a road test but get tiresome quite fast in daily use. Just fear the day she comes home and the jiggly ride has deposited her coffee in her lap, it will be your fault.wink

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Yep sorry for veering off.
Holdens lovely Captiva and everything small is made by our friends at Daewoo. Go figure.
The commodore is a good car across the board and has been for years. Recently seemed to slip but go find me a car that will do a million KM with minor complaints, The falcons do it better tho.

Bung: If the gearing around town is better is that just because the car doesn't change up? If it rolls over bumps better that suggests bigger diameter which isn't consistent with speedo being correct. Normally the circumference is maintained by adopting progressively more skateboard aspect ratios.

From a US Audi forum

"i was running with 19x8.5 with 225/35/19's, roada were rough so I felt every small bump on the road. rims get damage alot easier with small tires and rough roads. I ended up cracking and benting all of my rims and no one in the state of Maine would fix them so I had to chuck them. now I'm down to 17's again. :*-("

Thats because some retard stretched 225 tires onto a 8.5" rim. The sidewall is 35% of the 225 width. So your literally running on a 78MM thick bit of rubber.
Dad runs 255/40R19 IIRC. The correct factory fitment size. Hence why i keep saying only put a factory wheel on your car that it came with from factory. 1" diameter difference wont be noticed by the average road user, Lower RPM at speed and higher gearing. Maybe 25-50 less RPM at 100kph.

Putting 225s on an 8.5 inch rim isn't stretching anything. in fact, if you go to a tyre size calculator, you'll  find 225 is the minimum width for an 8.5 inch rim. The max being 255.

And if the tyre sizes are correct, rolling diameter doesn't change, so nor does your gearing or speedo.

Yep a 225 will fit onto an 8.5" rim but its on the edge. I had 225/35R18's on my Audi S4 on a Genuine 8.5" B5 RS4 wheel.
The tires were most definitely "stretched" Meaning the sidewall of the tire is not vertical how ever tapers inwards. I ran a 235 after and it squared up a lot.
I also found my car rolled around a bit on the 225 over the 235.
The ride was harder. Do note the 235's sidewall is slightly thicker.

On dads S4 after the wheel change we dropped RPM at 100, The Jap import wheels were an inch smaller with lower profile tires.
1St gear launch is much better now as well, Given the new wheels are wider. It doesnt go straight to the limiter and spin all 4 anymore.

Wait... The wheels on it before were smaller? Or the wheels now are smaller? What does the wheels being wider have to do with rolling diameter?

Wheels being wider equals more grip. No longer loses all traction on launch. Wheels are now 19'. We're 18".

Yeah, but where does the less revs at 100 come from???

The overall diameter of the tire and wheel (inflated) is taller = higher geared.

The standard size for A4 19" is 255 35R 19 which is only +0.4% greater circumference than a standard 225 50R 17. Only 5 revolutions per mile, that gearing change wouldn't be noticeable. 255 40R 19 on the otherhand is +4.2% greater or 34 revs per mile or just under the current speed tolerance difference in speedo readings.
