mclean: My money is still on the parking brake, not the pads/rotors.
Delete cookies?! Are you insane?!
mclean: The parking brake is a separate cable-operated DRUM brake hidden behind the rear brake rotor. If it's not adjusted right or if it's sticking in the morning when you release the pedal it can leave the shoes binding slightly. The thing with drum brakes is that one side of the shoe pair has a sort of self-actuating action, so if a shoe is binding slightly it can apply itself more when the drum rotates in one direction of rotation and release in the other direction.
You get to the adjuster nut through a hole in the rotor. But I'd want to be taking to the rotor off first for a good look behind (which they will do anyway if they skim the discs).
Or it could be something else completely!
Another remedy I was told by a dealer was to take it up a hill like the Rimutaka's and ride the brake the whole way down to heat the brakes to high temperature to burn off material..... hmmmm no thanks.
