Batman:

the Comcom has already fined numerous businesses for selling you the CGA

I normally either negotiate a very very low price for a 4 year extension (which brings most things to 6 years) or I don't.

There are some benefits with a 6 year warranty - I have had a few things crap out at 5 years 10 months (no joke), and you call them and there is completely no call out fee, no transport fee (eg a fridge would need to be trucked to the repair shop), etc. Had that happen a few times and it's more than pay for the hundred bucks I paid. Once I was in Australia and harvey norman's warranty covers everywhere that has a Harvey norman! But that was my fault apparently, a sock found its way to the water exit of my bosch washing machine, but I do fill it 3 times more than its rated capacity. It's now over 10 years I've had that bosch ...

Apparently for the cheap stuff they give you a new one - I have not had that before so I don't know if they will or won't. I bought a 6 year warranty on a handheld vac just to test it out!

Time is money is the other thing. You could literally spend tens of hours arguing about cga, file dispute tribunal with more hours plus fees. For a hundred bucks at Harvey it's no big deal. But I've never negotiated anything successfully at noel Leeming so I don't bother when I buy there.

There are some benefits of a warranty such as those that you've listed. I'm not totally against them - if people are willing to pay extra for one they may make life easier than a disputes tribunal case if something goes wrong.

In this case once again Noel Leeming have failed to comply with the requirements of the law and provide a summary detailing the benefits the cunsumer will see of the extended warranty vs the CGA. To say an extended warranty is essential is also very dodgy.

maxeon: Is there a link to report to com com?
How easy is the process. Back of my mind don't want to get into troubling the sales person.

I presume you bought the warranty (is it 3 years ie +1 year or +3 years ie 5 years??)

for premature screen defects from being display model.

I would list down all the screen issues and explicitly ask them if it's covered by the warranty and get them to write it down.

If not, you have grounds to cancel the warranty.

eg screen burn

screen discolouration

screen etc

I happen to read the full terms on the SuperCover warranty that is offered on Noel Leeming (via the PDF Link here)

Thanks to you - I checked the Screen Burn and re-gassing section on Page 9 and it's listed in exclusions. I think from CGA prespective I am actually better off covered.

Will call and cancel this straight away.

I believe it's 1 year manufacturer warranty and 3 years extended which possibly means 4 years from yesterday.

Cheapest new OLED i've found, Although this is a 2017 model its still leaps ahead of LCD/LED tvs.

Think its Auckland only delivery though.

Showing as $4999. Most expensive OLED around.

I went to Noel (Queen st) today to cancel the extended warranty.

The manager questions me

Was this given as part of a deal package? if so I need to validate with the sales person if the discount on the TV is still valid???

I told him, he said he can only sell it this way, but I have read about this warranty and feel it's not more than what CGA offers and would like to cancel under the cool off period.

He insisted he calls the sales person to check before refunding. I was a bit furious and said, how about you check after I leave as I will need a refund on this under my 7 day cool off period, and he agreed and processed.

He however checked any notes on the sale and decided he should offer refund.

To be honest, I felt like not shopping with them again due to this pushing to buy warranty strategies they apply to consumers. Unknowingly a lot of people will just buy into it.

This thread can be closed, I will explore my options on reporting to com com on this.

Well buying warranty that covers screen deterioration - I would for a display model!

Buying warranty that doesn't cover anything! Well, that's a bit naughty.

I'm not aware of any warranty whether that will cover screen deterioration - it's a natural part of a TV. The fact it's a display model makes zero difference - but the only thing I'd be checking for with any floor model is that it has no screen burn in the first place as this is still a very real issue for OLED TVs.

What's the best way to check for screen burn on an oled?

And presumably there will be some, what would one judge as acceptable?

On the other hand, we all have oled mobile phones that have some very static bits, well more statics that tvs, haven't seen anyone complain about screen burn so hopefully the technology is not as bad as it sounds?

maxeon: No screen burns. Plus I have paid for extended warranty just to ensure.

Out of curiosity since that offers no additional protection vs the CGA how to they pitch it these days and what do they promote as the key differences between the warranty and the CGA on the summary page they need to give you?

I bought an HP laptop for the wife recently from Harvey Normal. The pitch, and it was quickly applied. is that you can get an instant replacement. I declined so unsure if a form was coming. They should be offering a "3 Year Fault Instant Replacement Service" not a warranty. As we already have a warranty via the CGA

Re my post above, the salesman did mention discount this discount that, I'll need to look it up to see how much discount, it got confusing. he was throwing offers at me, discounts, all depending discounts, extra warranty. I'm sure many must just give up and cave in and assume they are getting extra discounts and take the lot

About the screen burn. It's not very common when I read about it specifically on LG TV as they design their store mode to run with no constant image appearing.

Also their software on TV does pixel refresh on a timely basis plus it has logo reduction etc. Even when the tv has nothing tuned and turned on the frame shows constant changing patterns and images that auto rotate.

Unless there was a feed running with a constant logo and ticker or something it's unusual.

Screen burn on floor models realistically isn't as much of a deal as it was historically.

In the old days you'd typically find a store just ran a FTA signal to all their display models and this would result in screen burn from channel logos.

These days most stores are running 4K demos because they want to show you how good the TV looks when it's displaying native 4K content. If they showed you had bad it looks displaying a SD FTA channel nobody would buy the TV. 😀

OLED screen burn (and more importantly the half life) is a real issue despite software fixes to try and eliminate screen burn. That doesn't alter the fact OLED is still the best technology out there right now, but much like plasma was prior to OLED the reality is the screen burn issue was a flaw both technologies had. When my plasma dies I will be replacing it with an OLED because quite frankly every LED TV out there pales in comparison.

Here's an interesting article I read last year https://www.techhive.com/article/3239350/will-hdr-kill-your-oled-tv.html
