Fred99:

The rest of the world (with a few exceptions) also don't want the US as "World Police" either.  Especially a US that's actively sabotaging all organisations involved in agreements on security, trade, health, human rights, and environmental protection.

We've entered an era of deglobalization, we need to invent a new world order, supply chains need to be rewired - sure international institutions are not prepared for that, having Trump around still blows their minds.  A lot of voters view globalization as a zero sum game - here we go back to 1930s isolationism and protectionism.

Small open economies aren't going to like the next decade.

That's one more reason I want Biden to win.  Small open nations like NZ have been used to being screwed over (ie it's very hard getting equitable trade access with the US, EU, Japan etc) and it's going to get worse for no benefit.  NZ does a LOT of trade with China and I hope can continue to do so *without* it becoming political - but being aware of Chinese hegemony and addressing it on another forum.  The Trumpian way is the wrong way, using trade as a coercive bargaining tool *always* backfires.  Trump's "exclusions" to sanctions to placate Iowa soybean farmers doesn't work and never will.  If you think for a second he'd not do deals to put Trump Hotels in China if he had the chance - of course he would - while simultaneously mouthing-off about Chinese military expansion blah blah.  Then there's Ivanka's handbag business.

One of Hillary's biggest mistakes IMO was her U-turn on TPP.  Of course many countries (Aus / NZ) didn't like lack of trade concessions by the US and pressure to change our trading relations to placate US "Big Pharma" - but on balance it was a step in the right direction.  But that was sabotaged by lies about how abandoning TPP would help the US Blue Collar worker.  4 years later - it hasn't - it's only benefited your intensely wealthy and oligarch class, most of whom are staunch Republicans.

The Washington Post - Trump seems to believe in magic over science

today

President Trump doesn’t think Americans should put much stock in scientific consensus.

He prefers to sprinkle our most intractable and urgent problems with pixie dust and promises that - presto! - they will simply vanish.

The latest example of Trump’s magical thinking came Monday, when the president dismissed a suggestion that the dozens of fires raging across the West could be related to human-caused climate change.

Although 2020 is on track to be one of the hottest years on record, the president told state and local officials in McClellan Park, Calif., that “it will start getting cooler. You just watch.” ...

This is the same president who has insisted - repeatedly - that the novel coronavirus would simply “go away.” ...

EDIT

The New York Times - ‘Nothing to Do With Climate Change’: Conservative Media and Trump Align on Fires

today

Rush Limbaugh told millions of his radio listeners to set aside any suggestion that climate change was the culprit for the frightening spate of wildfires ravaging California and the Pacific Northwest.

Man-made global warming is not a scientific certainty; it cannot be proven, nor has it ever been,” Mr. Limbaugh declared on his Friday show, disregarding the mountains of empirical evidence to the contrary. ...

Hours later, Fox News host Tucker Carlson said those who blamed climate change for the fires were merely reciting “a partisan talking point.” ...

In my view it does not matter if Trump wins(very likely) or Biden wins the US is in for a violent crap storm and will reach beyond its borders. For the US 2020 was just the dress rehearsal.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Except, we haven't. What has happened to change the trade with China, other than Trump adding an extra tax on Americans for chinese goods?

The trade wars that Trump have been getting into has caused a lot of job losses in the US and it has raised the price of goods being imported, without manufacturing moving to the US.

A fundraising ad for US president Donald Trump’s re-election campaign reportedly used a stock photo featuring Russian fighter jets and weapons as part of a call for viewers to “support our troops”.

Silly Donald. You're supposed to show the military gear you use, not the gear your boss uses.

and probably bribing cops)

There's no need to, we taxpayers are already paying the police to ensure marijuana prices remain artificially high, thus ensuring it's profitable for gangs to be involved in them. No need to pay a second time when the taxpayer is already footing the bill.

When elite liberals believe in a conspiracy theory, it becomes true, like Russiagate. It’s like birtherism for the left.

They start off with something vaguely real then add krazy kompromat and kooky stuff. America is plenty capable of dividing itself without the Democrats needing to blame Russia

certainly less globalization and probably the unwinding of existing

Subsequently pandemic, increased nationalism, unfavorable views of China reaching new historic highs, Americans faulting China for its role in the spread of COVID and still divided on whether globalization is good for their country or not

I don't really understand the focus on China. It almost looks like a weird conspiracy theory in lieu of addressing real issues.

The US right is obsessed with China. No idea why, I assume because Eastasia makes a useful general-purpose bogeyman, sort of like the Commies in the 1950s.
