freitasm:

"“We want to find the balance, actually - balancing wasteful spending so that we can protect front-line services, [while providing] tax relief and growing the economy. That’s the key thing that we need to land this quarter.”"

How do you "balance" wasteful spending? You think it's wasteful, you eliminate it, not "balance". Or perhaps he meant "manage" which is still not great if you think it's a waste.

I think he's just using word salads.

It's reduce, not remove, because they know there'll be an uproar if they remove some things they consider wasteful that other people consider essential.

Plenty of uproars already (e.g. rolling back smoke free). They don't care. Their donors expect results. As far as they are concerned, all government money not spent on them is wasteful spending.

National and ACT seem to be coming to some acknowledgement the end of the world 'school attendance crisis' - or to be completely ungracious - election lie about 'other people's kids' - is/was in fact driven by covid requirements, sensible parents, and school policy.

And by 'acknowledgement' Seymour means 'send your sick kid to school so all the other kids can get sick too, or we'll fine you $3000.'

Green Party press release is very clear on the NAFT government's Fast Track bill: use it to bypass safeguards, expect to have your business upended when the government changes.

@SaltyNZ Problem is money talks. These companies exploiting the governments fast-track legislation will be also the highest donors to NACT for that very reason. Disgusting really.

That's why it's important to put a stake in the ground now. A lot of these projects will take years before they turn a profit. Opening an oil well, for example, isn't exactly a cheap overnight job. They know the government will change, sooner or later. Probably in 5 years, possibly in 2 the way things are going.

If they know there is a good chance their project will be terminated having sunk a lot of money into it but never getting any return ... they might reconsider even starting it, which is a win.

It also lays it out clearly for the Labour party: this will be a non-negotiable condition for working with the Green party. You could even read it as the Green Party's first release as the party gunning to be the new mainstream left-wing party given that the Labour Party clearly no longer wants to be based on their 2023 policies.

Saw a comment about Luxon that I thought was quite clever, given he used to run an airline: "Luxon is all class, unfortunately third." 😀

Building product standards from other comparable countries will be recognised by NZ. First positive policy announcement I can recall so far:

https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/2024/04/prime-minister-christopher-luxon-announces-plan-to-make-building-easier-and-cheaper.html

It sounds good. I'm struggling to understand what this means in practice. I see China sourced windows being installed I assume those are already legal. I'm aware there is a lot of China sourced ply around. Electrical already legal I think. Reinforced steel joist and similar steel building products perhaps? Structural wood products maybe?

Yep, that's the second good one. The first was unbanning pseudoephedrine ;-).

I have not tried it. I read some recent research indicating effectiveness of the tablets/capsules is statistically indistinguishable from placebo. Apparently nasal spray is effective. I have not seen spray for sale in NZ.

Edit: no wait that's phenylephrine - https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2023/09/why-are-ineffective-oral-decongestants-still-on-store-shelves/

No, you're thinking of phenylephrine (sold as e.g. Sudafed PE). And I can definitely confirm that phenylephrine has absolutely no effect.

Pseudoephedrine (sold as Sudafed) actually works.

Its all good but hopefully we get the good stuff and not Australia's rejects with appropriate labelling.

There is the problem we had with re-enforcing steel and structural steel from a certain country where the test certificates were just photocopies or forgeries.

So our road of national significance has redesigned bridges to hopefully cope.
Christchurch rebuilt on hope, as that below standard steel mesh is buried in concrete.
Our systems are not good enough to catch this early.

There was some mention of heavy metal contamination, lead leaching from plumbing too.

Big Clive is replete with products that have all the regulatory logos, and thats about it.

Hopefully the Government department cuts will not handicap the monitoring and verification where needed.

'Trust and verification costs too much' an old New Zealand saying. :-)

Opinion piece by Bomber where he is distinctly unimpressed with Luxon's 36-point (why 36?) plan:
