Banks should have a policy of never emailing you about your account unless it's a personal email from a specific staff member/manager that you've solicited contact with.
When I was with ANZ they had a secure-mail system where "email" contact was done through a secure-mail function on your account, and you were notified of replies by email with no links to click to login

I removed my email address from my banking contact details. A tad extreme perhaps, but I'll know for sure anything I receive is phishing, & I won't receive confusing spam from my bank. Win & win.
[edit] Interestingly there is no version of the message I received in my secure banking message system. If kiwibank wanted to get messages out to people who use online banking, then it would make more sense doing so through that interface, rather than email which not everybody bothers to check. Sigh.
