Only if it is viewed from the correct distance and height, which probably 70-80% of people don't, just look at how many people hang them above a fireplace and/or sit six meters across the room away. We have a Panasonic 50" Full HD plasma in the lounge for Blu-ray and MySky HDi with couches at 8 feet away, and a 42" Panasonic HD ready in the bedroom at 5 meters away from the bed being fed MySky HDi as well, no need for Full HD there at that distance.
this was exactly on my mind before i purchase my pioneer 1024x768
but i after i bought it, i have no regret what so ever, especially after being able to compare it with other brands of tv (friends got panasonic, sony and samsung) and it is no contest, even before calibration
my sitting position from my pio 50" is about 3.5m and the same distance with the pio 43". picture always as sharp as ever with fluid motion, no smearing no blurring nothing
my 2c
