Often them not being able to work things is more a cry for attention rather than not being able to work it, and they act more helpless just to get more attention. Dont feed the fire by jumping thru hoops everytime they cant work it.

Thought I'd add this in as we have a few clients in local rest homes with these.  We use an iPad or iPad Mini as the interface/controller, setup with 'Guided Access' 'ON' so the only page they need to worry about is the configured interface.  The IR/IP controlling is done via a Global Cache iTach unit connected through a basic WIFI router tucked up behind the TV.  We never have issues with the interface, setup correctly with buttons spaced well apart and with big icons make it easy for our clients to work/control.  The staff are fantastic and we only receive positive feedback from them as they now no longer get, "I can't get my TV/DVD to work", and they then spend the next 20mins trying themselves.  Because of the App and guided access, all they need to worry about is keeping it charged or plugged in, we have one that is permanently powered and mounted to keep this one client trouble free and happy, the staff absolutely love it!

Not a 'cheap' remote option, but one that works for us and our clients, even the ones that you would think are "too" old and would never be able to work this 'thingymawhatsit' :)

We have it setup well now, there where issues at the start with IR emitters coming loose by the cleaners, but a little bit of hot-glue fixed that and the control gear tied up securely at the back keeps everything "bump proof".  Plenty of good options out there.
