Hi all

Awhile ago I wanted to change from xnet to spark...being in an only fibre area(no copper), spark was only able to provide me internet and not telephone.

Has this changed?

My in-laws lived next door....and have just recently moved to spark, from xnet.
They haven't put in the new spark modem yet,apparently the cutoff date is today.

They were also told that they couldn't port their land line to spark as the current landline is/was with xnet.
Is this normal?

Any help would be appreciated.

Vodafone can provide a Telephone.

Known as a homephone wireless.

Spark AFAIK cant.

Spark offer Voice over Fibre to UFB customers using Fibre - Fibre Landline.

Would suggest just calling them to ask.

The smallprint on the main landline pricing page says that "prices stated are for all fibre-based voice only lines" so I can't imagine that you'd have any trouble.

Edit: Did you mean just phone, or phone and broadband? In any case the answer is the same; Spark can provide both services over fibre.

I believe that in the old days, Spark's equipment couldn't handle numbers from different "blocks". For example, where I live all Spark numbers begin with "30", but numbers from Xnet etc typically start with "92". Historically Spark's exchanges couldn't handle "92" numbers. It sounds like there may be a holdover there, although I must stress that I don't know for sure.

I'd like to know the answer on this too. Can Spark phone over fibre be provisioned with an out of exchange area number? E.G. A customer moves from say Blockhouse Bay exchange to Greenlane exchange area; can they bring their Blockhouse Bay number with them to provision on their Greenlane phone over fibre line?
Also, as above, can they bring a non Spark number (still within same LCA) to their phone over fibre line? E.G. A 950xxxx number etc?

A bit off-topic (well, a tangent anyway) but while numbers are supposed to be portable across carriers, why are landline numbers still tied to a particular exchange?

I believe that it's due to technical limitations with Spark's exchanges. As I understand it, each exchange is "hard coded" with the first few digits of the number.

You'd think there'd be a way around that by now...  My landline and mobile used to be the same number, which was nice, but I had to change my landline number when I moved, even though it was only two suburbs away.

They only are on a NEAX - because the concept of portability didn't really exist in the '70s

The fact Telecom were also to make changes to the NEAX's to support portability was great but they have a few exemptions because of minor issues.

They only are on a NEAX - because the concept of portability didn't really exist in the '70s

They have an option for a customer link but thats not a common product on offer.

The Voice over Fibre stack is hooked into a Broadsoft core and nothing to do with the NEAX. Hence why the feature packs are different on Fibre than what you can get on Copper, plus also why you get Caller ID for free on Fibre.

In regards to "fibre only areas" it depends on "which" fibre only area. As some crazy fibre only areas Spark don't have a handover in.

This map shows all the Fibre only subdivisions and which have handovers with certain RSPs.

This is the map from Chorus which shows the main UFB areas which Spark has a handover in every area vs Fibre Only Areas.

I was with WxC/Xnet on fibre only, recently changed to Spark 200/20 plan and and carried my phone number over and its a different number to the usual wgtn based.
only difference was the phone works of the ONT not the router.
Chorus didn't event attend my house to change, as soon I had received router during the day, internet with Xnet stopped in the late afternoon, I changed it over and it connected spark and i changed over the phone and the phone worked a day later. this had taken little bit to change over.
