I am very happy with Telecom at the moment!

I was expercing disconnections with my Telecom supplied D-Link DSL-502T whenever I played an online game or downloaded a 50+ mb file. I had a read of tUK5L5P8Xp87's comment that 'If you are a gamer, or a P2P fan, and you notice your DSL-502T dropping the connection, the modem is stuffed. Upgrading the firmware won't fix it, the hardware is burned from too much data.' (Here is the conversation).

So I contacted Telecom and I asked them what would they do about this? Would they supply me with a new single PC router or just do nothing about it?

I recieved a email a couple of days later telling me that 'This does not sound right to be honest, having hardware burned from too much data' but asked for my homephone broadband number to check that the line was alright.

I sent my number back and recieved an email the next day saying that they would send me a new router out and that I would have to send my faulty one back to them, which I was quite happy with.

The package arrived the next day, and to my surprisment, I recieved a Thompson modem/wireless router!

My conclusion is that I must have spent enough money over the last couple of years I have been with them to entitle me to get one of the more expensive roters, instead of the basic single pc modems.

Has anyone else experieced this kind, unexpected gift from telecom, or another ISP?

I never hard of "hardware burnt by to much data". It could be overheating though due to hot weather?

The base of my old D-Link actually melted, in a cold room.. It had good airflow around it and wasn't sitting on anything warm either..

Wow melted... Mine gets hot to. I just wish they would put a fan/heatsinks or at least better vents on the routers. You shure it is not just telecomes copper wires to your house?

Unless there was a large power surge that got past my surge protector and didnt harm any of my other gear (attached to the phoneline or the powerline) then I don't see how that would cause it.

Er... But that is bad design, or lack of a heatsink - but not "burned from too much data"...

If "too much data" caused routers to burn then I would have to had my routers replaced every couple of months here...

I'd suggest that it's more likely that a small bug crawled into it and caused a short circuit :)

There are a number (2-3) of varients of those dlink 502's but I have two torn to bits somewhere which I had robbed for some connectors, one based on a Texas instruments chipset and one based on a broadcom(?) chipset. They were not the greatest modems with general design and also powersupply switchmode regulator/dc-dc design in their day and I highly suggest they are kept in an area with very good airflow (use the little stand-uppers and sit it on it's side) or better still, replaced. One got a bit hotter than the other(s) but I forget which,

The 604 I had was of such poor powersupply design it made an audible sceeching noise, it ended it's life under a car tyre.
The Nokia ACP-12A chargers made by Salcomp also made this horrible screeching noise. (the FWHK and Astec models are fine)

I have my D-link sitting next to my monitor on the top of my computer workstation, where it can get hot from online gaming and big downloads, but there is enough air flow from the window next to my monitor.
It disconnects soon after I connect to a server in the game, which is quite annoying as every time it does it I have to restart the application engine and try again, with minimal success of getting a decent play.

I'm sure what they mean by "too much data" is simply overheating due to extreme usage. Obviously still a design flaw, or manufacturing fault, which is evidently limited to that particular brand. I don't think anyone is suggesting that it's normal or reasonable that using any router at full bore is going to "burn" it.

yup, Telecom replaced my faulty Dlink with a brand new one. This was after 2 or 3 years and I was no longer a customer of theirs. The modem was the original one I got from them when I signed up for the first time. I think the Dlinks have a 3 or 5 year warranty which they appear to honour!

Interesting that they replaced it with a thompson
We have to send our d-links back to dlink and replace it with another dlink if one of our customers has a problem.

I suspect they just buy so much of the thompsons its just cheaper to send you one of them rather than spend the time dealing with the R.A. department at dlink - they arent the nicest of people.
