(1) turn off wifi from the Telecom TG589vn, and turn off DHCP on your D6300 but leave wifi on. Then connect an ethernet cable from a LAN port of the D6300 to the TG589vn. In this way, the D6300 simply acts as an access point and all the routing and modem function is done by the TG589vn. However, my experience of the TG589vn seems to show it is not good on handling lots of traffic. This might cause it to hang in a few days time and you need to do a hard reset.
(2) go with what kawaii suggested. Use the TG589vn in bridge mode (and turn off wifi) so it only acts as a modem. And get another router to do the PPPoE autheication, routing and wifi.
(3) If (2) still no good, you might be having trouble with wifi interference. installed wi-fi analyser on an android phone and see which channel is best (least congusted) and change wifi to that channel.
(4) Go with solution 3 and buy a few ethernet over power adaptors (powerline ethernet). For your non-mobile device, connect your devices (PC / laptop / TVs) using the powerline adaptors back to the router in (3).
(5) Do (3) plus run some new cat6 cables under the house and connect your devices via those cat6 cables (this should be the best solution)
I've waited the ten days and the speed has stabilised more or less.
Testing with 2 heavy user computers has shown me that it might be the TG589vn "not good on handling lots of traffic."
I want to go with AKLWestie's option (2) which is what kawaii have suggested. 1. what is bridge mode and how do I go about setting it that way? 2. I'm still adamant that D6300 s the best router for our house ... how do I connect it 'as a router'
I'm already getting lost in the lexicon ...
I've spoken to the parents, and since they're in process of renovating the house, the under-house cabling is definitely an option we will consider. But for now, we want to stick with option (2).
Thank you guys again for the awesome amount of help.
1. What is bridge mode and how do I go about setting it that way? - You Telecom supplied TG589vn v2 contains a VDSL modem, router and wireless access point. - Enabling Bridge mode causes the TG589vn to function as VDSL modem and pass the authentication and router function to another networked device, in your situation the D6300. To enable Bridge Mode Go to 192.168.1.254 (default address) Under "Technicolor Gateway" on the left click "Configuration", then click "Setup my Technicolor Gateway" at the bottom under the "Pick a task..." section. The follow the instructions in the wizard and select bridge mode. http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=39&topicid=129594&page_no=2 You may also want to disable the WiFi within the TG589vn to avoid conflicts with the D6300. (may be best to configure this via an ethernet connection)
2. I'm still adamant that D6300 s the best router for our house ... how do I connect it 'as a router' Physically you will need to use an ethernet cable from one of the TG589vn LAN ports and plug the other end into the internet port of the D5300. Go to 192.168.0.1 Username: admin Password: password Under the Basic tab select Internet Does your internet connection require a login? Select Yes Account Name (leave blank) Domain Name (leave blank) Internet IP Address - Select Get dynamically from ISP DNS Server Address - Select Get Automatically from ISP Internet Service Provider Encapsulation - Select PPPoE Login user@xtra.co.nz Password abc123 Router MAC Address Use Default Address
The Broadband light on the TG589vn should light up green when VDSL has sync. I'm unsure if the internet light operates in bridge modem. The Internet light on the Netgear will be amber when the ethernet connection to the TG589vn is detected. The internet light will turn green when the internet connection is ready (authenticated)
I'll leave it up to you to configure the Netgear D6300 Wireless capability I use the D6300 manual from http://routers.awordpress.net/files/2013/05/R6300_UserGuide.pdf
The D6300 he mentioned was a ADSL Modem. Update its firmware to the latest, and look for a function to use a LAN port as a WAN port. Then bridge the Thomson router to it. I suggest though you understand what is going on and exactly what to do before you go ahead with it though. If you bridge mode the modem, and don't know how to set it back if something went wrong, then you'll have no internet. Though a factory reset would remedy this in most cases.
The D6300 is higher end device. It's better at handling multiple connections, it supports dual band so devices that can use 5ghz will have less interference, and it's probably got stronger wireless signal strength too.
These Technicolor/Thomson devices that Telecom give out are always garbage... look at the history of issues with the previous models they've used. No surprise to see performance and other annoying issues with this model.
Looks like Patrick G has posted some good instructions for bridging.
Give it a go and if you can't work it out I might be able to give you a hand one weekend, I'm in Mt Roskill (Lynfield/Waikowhai end) myself.
