hasso: I got a call from Telecom last night saying I need to amend my xtra email setings. It seems that they want everyone to use SSL and authentication to get their email. While the instructions are meant for users using "normall" email clients (Thunderbird, etc...), I've got an email server at home and use sendmail to send outgoing emails. Presently I use sendmail as an smtp relay to smtp.xtra.co.nz. This is still working (for now I guess but expect this server to be turned off at some point?).

The instructions indicate that they want users to use send.xtra.co.nz on port 465 (SSL). While this is OK for the usual clients, it seems this is not possible to setup with sendmail unless you use stunnel. Sendmail prefers TLS (using port 587). I see that send.xtra.co.nz has 587 open, so am wondering if I can use that instead of 465 (will it work and is it supported)?

Did they phone you? How can you be sure that it wasn't a scam call if they did. Wouldn't it be more secure if people had to phone telecom to do it?

Yes, when they called the converstaion started something along the lines of:
"Hi I'm <blah> from telecom. Is your email address blah@xtra.co.nz""
"Why do you want to know and how do I know you are from telecom?"

I was then referred to the Telecom website and received an email with confirming phone numbers... so all good.

You are obviously knowledgable in these sorts of things so are able to be cautious. However many people they are phoning won't be as knowledgeable.I can see it being open to abuse.
When people were getting those calls from people claiming to be microsoft, I recall microsoft saying that that would never phone you, so you should treat all phonecalls claiming to be from them as scam calls.
I have been phoned before by someone claiming to be a NZ ISP, and later found out it was a scam call. It sounded very legit, and only after I never received plan details from them and contacted the ISP, did I find out it was a scam.

My In-laws got rang today. A foreign sounding person who said they were from XTRA said they needed access to his computer to secure his email.... He has been done before by the "Phone scammer" so said "No thank-you".

REALLY TELECOM? The call was virtually a mimic of the phone scam here:

yes I can confirm we got a letter today saying same thing.. now the headache of getting my nas mail server to send tls or ssl

however postfix dont do ssl without a stunnel and tls im getting cert errors

and yes I test port 587 and TLS and it worked from pop peeper. so not sure why they saying not supported

as also on their website it says ssl/tls in brackets which is confusing..

is tls newer method or the older method of security ? prob have to google to find out
