The battery is to boost signal without requiring the use of a second USB port in low signal areas.

Comradehunt: yeah exactly. I get 3 or 4 from 5 signal, and in Timaru speed is 115K

Where are you getting the 115K figure? When it first connects (its not accurate, just the initial port speed) it displays 115 or something similar.

A speed test can quickly confirm whether you are getting EVDO connectivity or not.

Yeah your right, The Sierra watcher software says that each time I connect. I am getting EVDO connectivity, but not rev a. The watcher also says that too.

It is quite fast, like I think when doing a 20MB AVG update from a really old install file it was sitting on constant 70 KB/sec, so yeah obviously its going faster than the reported 115Kbits when it connects. I can quite understand how people can blast past their 1 GB limit and eventually cop $1000 bills from 50c/MB overage charges.

I just did a speed test at speedtest.net , and it reported 1130kb/s down, and 570kb/s up.

So I did have a better look at the watcher. I have noticed it doesn't always say 115kbits when I connect, and that it is now reading EVDO rev a. So what must be happening is when I first connect, if at EVDO it brings up a popup with 115kbits, otherwise if it has EVDO rev a it does nothing. This is why I hadn't noticed until now.

Mauricio - very sorry !!!  In no way was I trying to offend you at all.... last thing I intended. Simply a joke my friend.  I was just saying it sounds like you have found a solution and it involves shifting away from the 595.  Most grateful for all your comments and thanks for them.

Better put a smiley next time - hard to read joke, irony, sarcasm on a monitor...

Seriously though, CDMA is always my first connection option in New Zealand, but it just seemed to be completely FUBAR in Auckland...

Quite right about the smiley and sarcasm on mobitors . I shall remember that.... I think the forum is such a great source of info and obviously have a huge input!!

The CDMA mobile network is certainly a success story... so lets hope we can crack this issue.

i think you will find is the 115K is the usb port speed, also the speed of the cdma datacard can vary and the datacard can switch between rev A, REv 0 and even 1x, the datacard and cell site are dynamic and change to meet the conditions that exist, ie they talk to each other regarding signal strenght, capacity and demand etc   You can find that sometimes you can get speeds around 300KBs and other times 128kBs. Although this doesnt help your problem it will be interesting to see what speeds we get when TC change to GSM (voice) and the CDMA is free'd up (with all that spare capacity)

Finishing the saga.....

For those still chasing this problem. Telecom (Orb actually) and I finally decided to try the Minimax hardware and software as a solution.

So far so good. Works brilliantly... have been running it for about three weeks with no problems. Very quick to connect cf Sierra card and good speeds. While I hate to spook the thing, it seems to me to be solid.

Thanks to everyone on here who helped with suggestions. I was well sure all things had been tried by the time this more drastic solution was adopted. Maybe Vista SP1 will solve whatever the problem is.

I have to also say the Orb guys Daniel and Kris at the Terrace Wgtn were excellent to - in follow up, the money thing and with suggestions... so a tick for Telecom on this one for sure - at least at the retail end.

Now some 6 weeks with the Minimax solution and still working very well. I had heard rumours that it was not as fast as the Sierra but I can't say I have noticed any speed problems at all. I have downloaded plenty of large files and from a variety of sites and mirrors and no complaints about speed. I would definitely recommend this solution for anyone having problems.

The conclusion was that it was (in my case at least and having tested the hardware and the number etc) a Vista problem or at least my configuration of Vista on my machine (which of course I think is very standard but....). Maybe SP 1 will alter things favourably in terms of the Sierra card.

For what it's worth I had exactly the same problems with Vista and the Aircard 595u. Fortunately the card is on trial so I can return it.
