My one concern with Bigpipe was, in Christchurch all their traffic seems to route through Auckland, which means you never get the 1ms pings to Christchurch speedtest servers that others on UFB here have, considering most servers are in Auckland, or overseas

But I don't think that is much of an issue, it's still a great service

Do it. No contracts and stuff so if you for some reason are not happy then its easy to move to another UFB provider once installed.

Just dont jump the gun and tell VF where to go until you have it installed and working, because the UFB install process is well known for getting held up with neighbours permission and also pole problems in Wellington.

The only thing that is holding me back the location of the ENT & ONT boxes in my home. The ONT will need to be in the center of the house (actually a cupboard) rather than any external walls. My next door neighbor who has an near identical floor plan had to pay extra for ONT box installed in the hallway. I did not think that sounded right, unless Chrous is tightening their belts???

Just to make thinks even cleaner looking I was thinking of digging a trench so the UFB cable can go underground. However as part of the UFB rollout in my street. there are fiber cables looped halfway up my power pole in preparation for the home install.

I had my scoping visit on Monday and the ONT is going into a cupboard towards the back of the house (not on an exterior wall), no extra charge. Every install is different though, you could request a connection and if you're not happy with their install plan just say no.

Edit: I just had another thought, did your neighbour request the cable go down inside the wall of the hallway? They'll charge extra for that unless you run a piece of string for them first.

You mean ETP?

@OP it sounds like porkies. I doubt a consultant would have gotten all of the large RSPs to provide them with information of their international capacity vs the total demand of all their customers (if so I imagine there would have been an NDA), and that the organisations he was dealing with were probably looking at high-CIR business services.

Got to love friends that say they know about things but really they would not know poop from clay if they tasted / smelt it

International traffic is a pipe and end users share that pipe and ISPs monitor the traffic on that pipe for peak time traffic and generally buy more if needed, Then lots of traffic could be on a local CDN so even if it looks like international it might actually be local

Your friends sound like they are rather mis-informed.

I suspect the tubes would be monitored using some type of SNMP software /nagios or something similar, and notifications alerts are sent to the correct people when congestion occurs or certain thresholds are exceeded for more than n (time). More capacity will be added if needed and/or traffic will be advertised to take different paths using border gateway protocol (BGP) if necessary. This is what network architects do.

Most networking is virtualised these days anyway. But not to worry, were not all experts.

Your friend probably has no idea whats going on inside all the different networks, (Vocus, Sparks, Vodafones etc...) so I wouldn't get too worried about it. If a provider is offering a good level of service, and its customers back that up then make your decision about who to use based on that. Not something drunk guy called (name here) said at the pub one friday.

Wow! it's starting to sounds like a presidential debate "CALL SEAN HANNITY.. SOMEBODY CALL SEAN HANNITY.... BUT THEY WONT!!!".

I don't think he was misinformed at the selected providers would pitch there proposals based on a number of factors including 'Contention Ratio'. Lower the ratio high the cost for the circuit.

Anyway is seams to me that BigPipe don't over saturate the connections to work at a price point.

Also it is annoying that you can't change posts (before a set time limit) due to spelling mistakes and I do understand why, but come on.

I think he know quite a lot about spark. One of his major customers at the time was with telecom and cost them $100,000 over priced, under performing circuits. It was one year battle with Telecom get them to break the contract agreements. It cost him a lot of time & money and that's why he hates Telecom. However this was a good few years ago before UFB even existed.

International pipes are pretty decent these days with the price so low, the data I would be most interested to see is the local handover and backhaul from the various regions to the ISP. That is the area most often forgotten about and also quite expensive so likely oversold.
