pebbles: Just a question - anyone know if there is anything you can do with useless prizes? Like video calling and ringtones, can't use either on my phone

Yes, I know they are free so I should just be grateful, but good to know if there are any other options.

you can't use voice calling on your phone?  Surprised

What, I clearly said video! At least that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

It's irrelevant whether it was a limited time promotion or not.  The additional value provided by the bonus top ups factored into many people's decision to use XT prepaid.  Now this 'promotion' has ended, and we were promised "...but don't worry, we're launching a fab new top up promotion any day now...".

I personally thought that whatever replaced the bonus top up was not going to be as good, I expected something along the lines of 2degrees' magic topups.  But what has replaced it is a complete joke, not at all "fab" by my reckoning.

So I and other people feel aggrieved at the perceived bait and switch, and when it comes down to it - the value is not there any more for many people, so they will switch networks.  I think we have every right to complain about it, IIRC no one has said that Telecom has done anything wrong - but we do think they have done something stupid.

The brilliant thing here... All providers now use sim cards, gone are the days when you needed a new phone to switch. Now that there is three carriers, you can see there will be some heating up of the mobile market. Come on April and we will see some big changes :)

Over the weekend on one of my drunken escapades a mate was randomly going on about it all, I am glad to see its not just the geeks who go on about this stuff. When CDMA is closed telecom will be in trouble...

All we need to start complaining about is the monopoly of the supply of food in this country and possibly we will be on track!

To all those saying that the topup bonus thing was a promotion - really? I must have been duped by all their fancy marketing because I never ever recall it being a limited time promotion. I know that Non-stop TXT and TXT 2500 were promos but topup bonus seemed to be sold as a permanent feature of XT prepaid??

That sums it up.

Next thing you will forget Vodafone's 3GB mobile data is a promotion, with no date to end. So here is a reminder: it's a promotion.

?

I've already dealt with this.

IMO it is common knowledge that Vodafone 3Gb offer, Telecom $10 TXT, 2 Degrees $10 TXT, XT TXT Anyone, XT TXT 2500, XT TXT 2500 double to 5000, are/were all time limited offers.

The marketing of these promotions all clearly stated in the advertising material that there was an end date, and stated the date (or conditions).

XT topup bonuses were introduced at launch WITHOUT any time limited conditions on advertising material (that I ever recall seeing) and the perception was that this was fundamental to the pricing structure of XT prepaid. It is NOT ok to hide behind the XT network general T&Cs to cover themselves for withdrawing the "promotion".

Can anyone recall ever seeing an end date to the topup offer on advertising of this offer?

I would be interested to see any ads people still have for the ceased topup offer.

If it was only a "promotion", then shouldn't it have been only listed on the "Special Offers" page?

Plus... "Top up & Win" is not available to T-Stick users (http://www.topupandwin.co.nz/findoutmore/faqs.cfm)... yet Telecom clearly stated that "Bonus Top-ups" were being replaced by a "FAB new promotion". There was no replacement for T-Stick users, so that was a misrepresentation.

XT is the only viable source of broadband in many rural areas. A $20 dollar per month increase is a cost my household just cannot afford.

I know of at least 2 people who use XT as their main internet connection due to being rural. And they have pretty much said the same thing.

Does anyone have any brochures/pamphlets/advertising/etc. promoting the previous XT Topup bonuses?

I would be interested to see anything that anyone has.

Also, does anyone happen to know how to get an "old version" of the following website:

http://www.telecom.co.nz/topup

The one that used to have the bonus topup information. I can quite clearly see that the current offer has an end date of 31 May 2011, but I am adamant that no date was ever mentioned on the old version of this page ie. it was not stated clearly as a time limited offer at any stage until the very recent past.

Top up your XT Prepaid mobile

Topping up your XT Prepaid mobile or T-Stick can be a rewarding experience.

Not only do you get up and running again and in touch with your friends and family, but with Prepaid on the XT network you get bonus credit every time you top up. And the more you top up the better...

No mention of any expiry date / limited offer that I could see.

Regardless of whether it was marketed as a promo or not, was it ever stated as 'get this forever'?
Any company can change the price of anything or giveaways or whatever can't they?
It's their business.

Whenever I see "bonus" I expect it to be above the deal, and temporary.

If it wasn't temporary it would be incorporated to the plan and not a "bonus" anymore.

Of course they can but this could be viewed as a bait and switch to get people onto XT.

The way it's all been handled feels pretty deceptive - to be honest I've been a pretty big Telecom fan in recent times as Paul Reynolds (as much as people seem to hate on him) has always seemed to me to be pretty upfront and honest in his dealings.

This is underhand and very "un-Reynolds-like" from what I know of the guy (which is based purely on what I've seen on him in the media - perception is reality).

Just topped my account yesterday and I get this thing via text message where you had to go on-line enter a code and play a game to collect your instant prize. It's very similar to the shell promotion that was on , any way I went on-line and won 120mb of internet data usage which I thought was useless as I don't go on the internet on my phone.
Then it asked me what type of phone I had so I put in Nokia 1100 to see if it would give me something different. It did 20 minutes worth of free international calling that's not very use full to me ether I don't call people over sea's.

So umm I feel kinda ripped off the bonus top up offer was much better.
What could Telecom do about this? here's an idea why don't they allow customers to choice a free bonus of there choice that way they could choice one that is suable to there needs. Just an Idear

Yeah even if they have a limited number of each prize, it would still be better to let the customer choose their prize - it could be on a first in first served basis.

Also Telecom would then know which prizes are most popular and want the customer wants

Get over it, it was only a promotion. Just because it has ended you feel that it as of right...
