Can anyone provide me or direct me to a list of what does / doesn't work on Skinny Unlimited Broadband due to CGNAT?
Would love to switch from Orcon to Skinny, but this sounds like a deal breaker.

I understand that, depending on specifics of how the ISP has it set up, CGNAT / LSN / NAT444 potentially breaks:

Online gaming (Playstation, Xbox etc,)
Netflix
Remote access to files/webcam etc on my Synology box
VPN connections - for when I'm working from home
VoIP

Can anyone confirm whether these do / don't work with Skinny?

The basic answer is "does it work with double NAT?"

Netflix will be OK. VPN depends on which VPN protocol. Anything which is just straight UDP or TCP (like OpenVPN) will be fine.

Anything that requires port forwarding from your router won't work, so if that's how remote access to your Synology works, then no.

I like the pricing of the Skinny option but having to either buy their modem or be locked into a 24 month contract with no way to get CGNAT turned off is a bridge too far for me.

I understand this isn’t supported by Skinny, but I’m thinking about switching and would need to be sure our home phone will work.

We’re already using the same network (given we’re with Bigpipe) and the same router (ex Vodafone but running the Bigpipe firmware), and successfully run VOIP off the router without a fixed IP.

Can I assume, therefore, that it should all work as it does currently if we switched to Skinny?

And @livingskinny or @SkinnyBB, does the requirement to purchase (if not use) the router still apply? TBH, having to pay $148 to transfer across from BP does mean it’s probably not worth it, whereas only a one-off $49 setup charge would be.(Of course, I know they’ll not be wanting to encourage movement between their brands.)

Bump - both on users' experience with VOIP on Skinny (as per q above), and from @livingskinny or @SkinnyBB in regards to the requirement to purchase the router.

I'm on Vodafone at the moment with one of their crappy HG659s. I realise the skinny unlimited offer gives me another HG659 that I get to keep forever for the super low price of only $99, but it's useless as tits on a bull to me. The only reason I need it is for VDSL functionality.

In fact, has anyone had any luck with bridge mode or PPPoE mode on these pieces of crap? I'ld like to terminate my connection straight onto my firewall without doing double (or triple, with CGNAT) address translation.

@Boxdog the HG659 is far from crap - it is one of the more capable routers that ISP's give and can route Gigabit with ease also. If you have such a problem with it then put the router into bridge mode or replace it with a Draytek Vigor 130.

This is also off topic... If you did a quick Google search on "HG659 Bridge Mode" you would have found what you're trying to achieve.

@Boxdog the HG659 is far from crap - to echo michaels comment this is a very capable router, albeit let down by slightly underwhelming wireless, but other than that it works as well if not better than many devices some hold in esteem.

Bigpipe might be for you, same as network as Skinny broadband but you don't have to buy their modem

I'm not a fan of the HG659 either, it's fine for very basic home use but not much more IMO.

Thanks guys, I probably should have used teh googlez to find that out. I have used the HG659 in a small flat but had bad experiences with it dying every second day and wifi dramas so have replaced it with a (overkill for the job) firewall. At present I'm on FibreX so the fw is just acting as a DHCP client on vlan 10 from the Technicolor yawn but are about to move to a non-UFB area and Vodafone want too much to install the coax down the drive so I'll wait until next year I think. Hence why I want to ressurect the HG659 from the dead to act as a VDSL bridge to my firewall when we move. Does the HG659 have a decent chipset for VDSL performance-wise?

HG659 uses the BCM (Broadcom) chipset, considered one of the best. I have used one here for a couple of years on VDSL, never needed to reboot it. Wireless is pretty bad, I suspect poor antenna's are the issue, but never bothered with it too much as the modem is in the garage and two other WAPs provide wireless in the house. I am approx 800m from the DSLAM and currently gives 48/20.

Awesome. Thanks. I will probably go with Voyager for VDSL as they have static IP options and no CGNAT from what I can ascertain. I'm doing a similar config as you - modem/firewall/POE switch in the basement and only one WAP in the ceiling, and plan to throw in a length of CAT6 from the copper demarc in the ceiling space down to the HG659 for best possible attenuation etc.. How do you know how far you are from the DSLAM? (I have been looking for cabinet information and haven't found much; I'm moving to Karori, Wellington)

I can confirm Voyager do not do CGNAT. You'll get a normal public IP, otherwise they have a very reasonable one off cost for a static.

God knows why they stuck 4 VDSL capable cabinets down the far end of Karori and nowhere else :-(

What you can do is punch nearby addresses into Chorus and they will often give you the sync speed. For example 159 Parkvale Rd (an address I chose at random) is on VDSL and getting around 27Mbps. So maybe all hope is not lost.

Edit - Hio is onto it. I was thinking it was a bit odd with the cabinet placement there.
