Hi guys,

can someone PLEASE provide me with a step-by-step guide on how to set-up the Telstra Cable modem with the Linksys WRT-54GL...I actually can't do anything and don't know how to get it to work!!

Firstly I recommend upgrading to DD-WRT found at www.dd-wrt.com.

Then put in the static IP address,subnet mask, default gateway and DNS Server into the Static IP address management page (192.168.1.1) and you should be away.

When TCL came and installed your internet connection they should have written all the necessary numbers you need on the Cable Modem box.

Can you tell me, is the Motorla a modem only?? Doesn't it have a dhcp server? I want to set it up like I had on Telecom (where I had FTP set up)...but I have no idea with cable broadband...Do I plug it into the WAN port or a LAN port in the router?

Cable Modem plugs in to WAN port.

Plug at least one pc into a LAN port in order to do the setup as mentioned by Bartender.

The Motorolla Surfboard is the Cable modem, no it doesn't have a DHCP server, think of it more like a "dumb" switch. So you need to manually put in the IP address you were assigned by TCL into the web interface of the WRT54GL. Normally when TCL do the install they write down the necessary numbers onto the box the surfboard came in. Otherwise if you had broadband setup on a PC the static IP should already be configured in there. If that is the case write down the IPAddress/Subnet mask (which is always 255.255.255.0), Default Gateway, and DNS Server (which should be 203.96.152.4 & 203.96.152.12), then change your PC/Laptop to DHCP.

Then browse on your same laptop to 192.168.1.1 on the Linksys router, I think the default username is "admin" no password for the Linksys firmware... then for WAN port config set it to Static IP (not DHCP) and plug in the numbers from your PC.

Username blank. "admin" for password.

Thanks for your help guys--- I tried all of this last night and it wasnt working...reset all the firmware etc. on all devices today, tried the same thing and now it is going..really really weird...

Just setting up the NSLU2 now...is there anything special I need to know pertaining to this with cable telstra or am I able to simply port forward from the Linksys router and thats it...wham bam?

TCL Cable modems if they are the "old" config will only accept connections from a single MAC address, so the first device that registers to the cable modem will be the one it uses. If you change devices (IE go from your hardwired PC to router) you need to reboot the Cable Modem to pick up the new MAC address. Ring TCL and ask them to change this as newer surfboard firmware / config means that you should be able to swap between devices at your leasure without the need of a reboot of the cable modem. Or just reboot your modem if you ever change devices that are plugged into it (and pray it comes back up again within the next 3-4 hours :)

Set a Static IP on the NSLU2, I had a HEAP of problems when I was running it in DHCP mode, the only way to get it reilably working was to set a static IP. Then are you planning to port forward port 80?? or do you want people to be able to map windows network drives to your NSLU2 (a dangerous thing to do IMHO, the internet is a dangerous place and there is plenty of port scanners out there ready to attack!).

The port fowarding support in the stock firmware is rubbish from memory, DD-WRT is great, lets you open any port to what ever you want IE PUBLIC:8080 -> Private:80 etc.

Maybe you could help me out with this...I have set up forwarding port 21 on the router to the static NSLU2 IP on the LAN...Ie: FTP my dyndns address in IE etc. and you can log into my FTP server. This is how I've always done it. Is there a better way of doing this? If so, I'd love to know how to! Port 80? Could you show me how? AND...does the DD-RWT have an interface, I'm not very good with Linux etc?

DD-WRT has a very similar interface to the factory firmware.
There's just more of it.

I'm not familiar with Linux at all, but it seems that you don't need to be unless you are wanting to write the interface yourself. :)

If you have a recent WRT54G you can only load the DD-WRT Micro firmware (due to memory limitations in the router).

I recommend you do it though, my router (WRT54G v5) would constantly lock up and refuse to do anything with the Linksys firmware - DD-WRT seems to have fixed that - there is still a slowdown when downloading torents or from steam but no loss of connection.

My router is Linux compatible (GL)- so I can load anything onto it. Not sure about the DD-WRT though, does it have an interface like the linksys one?

Can you provide a direct link to the 54GL dd-wrt firmware? and what are the benefits? Does it allow for a faster internet connection?

The benefit for me was being able to boost the transmit strength.
Seems very stable though.
