Hey, sorry i havn't got back to you. So far it is working great with the firmware upgrade, but i have not done a reset like it told me to do after the install of the firmware. I might do this today or if i have any more problems. I'll get back to you...

Well, kinda.
It's behaving in as much as the wired PC's are connected fine and I'm not having any disconnections.
The wireless however is a whole different story.
The wireless PC has lost connection and I can't seem to get it to connect again.
It can see the wireless network (and that of the neighbours) but it won't hook up to the network.

Okay, so no dropouts for you on the wired pcs? That's good.

Perhaps the wireless settings have got mucked up - can you reset to factory defaults and try again? Has it ever hooked up to successfully to your local network? Have you flashed to latest bios update? Oh, that does seem like a lot of Qs there!

Wireless originally connected ok when I first installed the router.
Only dropped out today for some unknown reason.
Latest firmware on the router didn't help.

However, after much research, I went to a 3rd party firmware from DD-WRT and increased the transmit power from the default 28mW to 70mW (max is 251).
Having done that it works fine.

It's always been a low signal to the far end of the house, and the Linksys options don't have any way of boosting the signal strength.
Yay to 3rd party firmware. :D

Other than that, no dropouts at all so far.

FYI, I am with telstra broadband and in about july last year I installed a Netgear WGR614 V7 and connected it to my xp desktop computer directly, and my laptop running XP.

However what a dog!!!
It kept on locking almost every day and the reboot took ages.
(which was frustrating as many people here on Geekzone gave it a good writeup)

Anyway after perserveering for 6 months - Two weeks ago I bought a

Linksys Wireless G Broadband Router WRT54G

The guy in Dick smith said that the linksys product was better with Telstra modems compared to D-Link which was better with Xtra modem.

While I thought he was just doing a sales job - it has been a lot more stable and has only required one boot in the last two weeks. and I should say the boot is VERY quick compared to the netgears.

One thing thought, its range isnt quiet that of the Netgears hence I am interested in the 3rd parties range boost capabilities.

Question though, is there any risk as my wife will kill me if I muck this router up.

you want the linksys WRT54GL as the L allows for third party firmware to be loaded on it. I have had mine at home in operation running the DD-WRT firmware and i have not had to touch it since i last upgraded the firmware 6+ months ago. It's still running the 2.4 Beta firmware from DD-WRT, but hasn't missed a beat.

You can load the micro / mini versions on the non-GL versions of the WRT54. However there are extra steps required to kill off VXWorks and replace it with Linux... not that I have done that before as I have the GL :).

Hi Guys

I have had major problems with Telstra cable dropping off all the time.

I have tried a Netgear router and someone has just given me a Linksys with the lastest update on, which seem to work for a couple of days, but is know also having major crashing problems.

Someone recommended the U.S. Robotics u s r 5 4 6 1 or u s r 8 0 5 4 6 1 w i r e l e s s m a x g r o u t e r. They recked it had something to do with it having a hardware firewall instead of the software one.

I am no expert in these matters so I am not sure if this is the case or not, but he claims that he has had no crashes since he changed to the US robotics router.

I'll try and find the site I found step by step instructions on for upgrading the firmware.
As Bartender mentioned, the GL version seems to be the one to go for, but you can still upgrade the G version.

Yes, there is a risk. If something happend mid upgrade you run the risk of "bricking" your router. Otherwise known as turning it into a brick. The instructions are very clear about not messing with anything mid flash, sitting on your hands etc.
Mine went fine though with no issues at all.

After having frequent disconnects this evening while trying to work from home, I finally bit the bullet and ordered a Linksys WRT54GL router. My connection was dropping on my wired PC but fine on laptop (go figure). So damn annoying when trying to log in remotely and do things at work. I really can't wait to see if this puts the frustration behind me!

Ahhh, the irony - while writing this my net timed out so have had to rewrite the damn thing.

Will post here once I have the new router in place (and after it's been running for a few days).

Well I installed the router yesterday and all is well - no disconnections while using my PC directly. Unfortunately when I came to work and tried to log on to my home PC, it was showing as being offline. I didn't enable the 'keep Internet connection alive' option on the Linksys router so will do this when I get home tonight and see if that improves things.

I also found an interesting article about Win XP SP3 - which mentions improvement of 'black hole router detection'. This allows SP3 to keep alive internet connections without a performance compromise. Can read here (first paragraph): http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2200799,00.asp

It appears i am still having issues after upgrading the firmware, i am going to contact netgear support again and see if they have any more suggestions.. will let you know.

It appears after trying to contact them, their servers are down for maintenance or something.. it says they should be back online on the 23rd of feb but thats allready been...

We are currently upgrading our systems so we can serve you better. We expect to be back online by Saturday, 23rd February 2008, 5:00 am Pacific Time.

Well it appears I can't turn on the 'Keep Internet Connection Alive' option as that is only available for Telstra Cable (assume in Oz) whereas here we are on static.

Next step for me is to upgrade firmware, probably to the dd-wrt version.

Hmmm, there is also a great thread here: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?ForumId=44&TopicId=19313 I guess I could try changing my internal IP addy as well.

Mine has been working sweetly on all connections since the firmware upgrade/crossgrade to DD-WRT.

I don't log on to my PC remotely, and it's off during the day when I'm not at home, so I can't help on the Keeping it alive thing.
