Data is overly expensive... so why would I pay for it? It works on WiFi anyway.. and if data becomes cheaper in the future I will add it then.

Sounds like an iPod Touch might be a fit if not using phone capabiity and just use it on Wifi

You can if you buy the phone outright and put a prepay sim in it.

True that, but I still txt/call/take photos occasionally and don't want to carry more than 1 device. Hmm which now when I think about it further would make the 1st gen iPhone a better match.

Someone explain to me this....

How come I can't downgrade my minutes on the base iPhone plan to 60 mins

i.e. choose 120 to choose 60 = $20 credit ($59.95 vs $39.95)

and upgrade my data allowance from 250MB (equivalent 200MB plan at $29.95) to the 1GB level ($49.95) = $20 debit

net change in outlay = $0

chance of purchasing two iphones in this household = much, much higher

this kind of flexibility would probably sway more people to buy in at that base $80 level.

Just spoke with both our Vodafone business account manager and our First Mobile account manager, and I gathered the following:

- You can buy the phone and re-sign your current plan for 24 months at the same time AND get the hardware subsidy available for that (in my case, $320 towards the phone).
- If you add a data plan at the same time, you'll get an additional subsidy of either: (a) $80 if it's a 200Mb plan or (b) $150 if it's a 1Gb plan.

Hardware subsidies are defined BY EACH STORE, so each Vodafone/First Mobile/DS Wireless/etc store is likely to have a different offer.

Why not load a pre-pay SIM? Vodafone don't lock their handsets - apparently?

Not per se, but if they sub lock the SIM *not* to work with prepay sim cards, it isn't going to work.

Vodafone specifically states that the Iphone "won't be available" with a VFNZ prepay simcard, though I think they're doing some backtracking. -EDIT

You need to have subscribed to either an iPhone plan or alternatively a standard On account plan (You Choose, talkZone, or Corporate) with a compatible Broadband plan for mobiles.

I agree. They don't need to. Everybody has to sign a contract before they can walk out of the store with an iPhone. Though a prepay sim can be used on the phone, the monthly fee still has to be paid.
