Wonder if 2100 MHz was chosen because it's the only frequency common to all three carriers. So easier to have a joint site (with what looks like, at the very least, shared antennas). Really good to see joint builds happening across three carriers. I know of many examples overseas of two carriers sharing infrastructure (e.g. EE+H3G in the UK, VF+O2 in UK, Optus+VF in AU, old Telstra+H3G in AU, etc) but this is the first I've heard of three carriers. Well done to all involved.

Awesome! Although I just checked 2degrees coverage map but it's not there (yet)...

I wonder what the "solution" is for 4G including data - maybe finally getting fibre down to Haast for backhaul?

Guessing but air fibre would be the most cost effective way

Sorry, dumb question but what's air fibre? Wikipedia (and Google) don't seem to know much about it :(

Right, that would be best. I imagine laying fibre in the ground to Haast (as nice as it would be, as it would give some redundancy, even through to Wanaka) would probably be prohibitively expensive.

Its not crazy for the distances involved but yeah for sheer spend per population, it is not cheap

Drove through Haast today. Picked a signal up approx 4 kms from the Wanaka end and lost it again about 6 kms towards Franz Josef. Will attempt to upload a picture of the cell site but it was on a pole about the height of a street light with 3 sectored antennas. Clearly designed only for coverage for the main town area.
Both Spark and Vodafone signals were received.

Sure did. Only showed 3G on both phones. And although I did not conduct a speed test it was noticeably very slow. Maybe only slightly better than dial up!

What was the original 3G data spec? Something like 384kbit/s

a few towns I have noticed have different antennas. I have seen some Spark sites with Omni directional antennas (looks like two long telescopic antennas) but Vodafone seem to go with the sectored panel antennas. Any reason why? Benefits of both?
