And so it came to pass that I got the job of changing an XP machine for a Win7 one.
All is well except for the accounts package that is installed, which will require at least 2 upgrade procedures before it is compatible with Win7. The original media is missing hence the requirement to upgrade.
I had the bright idea of "imaging" the XP using Disk2VHD and then using Virtual PC on a Win7 box to test the upgrade process (coz you cant be too careful when it comes to accounts packages or the people that use them).
The Disk2VHD seems to work well enough and I was able to create a virtual machine with the VHD file in Virtual PC on a Win7 box.
The virtual machine even starts up and displays the three choices of user logins.
But the good news ends there, the mouse cursor will not move and I can not click on any of the user names. The keyboard doesnt seem to work either.
This also stops me from installing the Integration features.
I also tried creating a virtual machine using both a VHD and a VHDX file in Hyper-V on a Win8 pc, and each time I get the same result, a login screen and no mouse or keyboard.

Have I missed a step or is there some trick to getting mouse control in these scenarios?

Nothing happens when I press the Ctrl-Alt-Del button in either environment.
Is this important?

Hi Kiwifidget,

Did you manage to solve this issue and if so, could you elaborate on how you accomplished it?

I have the exact same problem.

When I boot up the XP Guest VPC and hit F8, the keyboard works and I can select boot options, but as soon as the XP GUI loads, the keyboard and mouse stops working.
I've tried booting into safe mode and into Cmd mode, but I get the same result regardless. (Cmd mode just boots into normal XP GUI mode anyway).
In the VPC console under settings, it's telling me that the integration features are not available. I've tried installing the integration features from the console menu, but I suspect this fact is actually causing the issue.
Without the integration features, the virtual DVD rom also doesn't work (I suspect)

Any thoughts, ideas or help will be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. I think I found a work-around... Virtualbox to the rescue!
Later versions of virtualbox support VHD files without the need to convert them to VDI.
Virtualbox doesn't have the driver hangups that VPC has, but as far as I know, it also doesn't have the windows integrated features, like adding a shortcut to the host, to automatically run an application on the guest.

I've never heard of VirtualBox but I shall look into it for future projects.
As for my original purpose of testing the upgrade procedure in a virtual environment first, I just had to suck it up, send a quick prayer upstairs, and do the upgrade on the live system.
Thankfully it all worked out OK!

You were quite lucky then.
In my case, the guest wouldn't even recognize the host's optical drive, or any iso assigned to the virtual drive.
It was like the winXP OS was ignoring the entire virtual subsystem and any attempt at input along with it, so there was no opportunity to upgrade or repair the OS

Virtual box was developed by Oracle as an alternative virtualization platform for Linux and unix based systems. They've expanded it recently to also run on Mac and windows.
You can download it free here: https://www.virtualbox.org/
