Just clone the hdd on to the ssd, simple.
There are lots of free cloning programs.

does windows 8 have "complete PC backup"?

do a complete PC backup and restore into SSD? (but you still need to create the bootable USB as described)

Cheers all,

Could not clone the drive having tried about 4 different programs. I think it was a dynamic disk issue.

freitasm - cheers for your advice (and everyone else). Didn't realise I could make a USB recovery disk. Worked well.

Now just having a problem with the MBR I think.

Every time I cold boot I get a message saying A problem has occurred and windows will restart. It says to search online about "KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR" to find out what is wrong.

This is the best solution I could come across: http://www.eightforums.com/bsod-crashes-debugging/13253-bsod-every-cold-boot-kernel_data_inpage_error.html it seems like the same problem I have had.

I don't know how to do the chkdisk /r /f thing. Any ideas?

Its the new SSD. The old disk is now a separate USB drive

Have you changed the BIOS AHCI option by any chance?

If you change AHCI to ON before you enable the drivers then Windows won't be able to load.

Sorry I should have been more clear.

I installed the new SSD and used the USB recovery disk I made to do a (relatively) clean install of windows.

Since then, every time I boot the computer once it has been off for a while, I get the error message (see photo).

When it then restarts a minute or two later, it is fine. If it has been one for a while, I can turn it off and on without reproducing the error.

I have looked in the boot menu to change to AHCI but have not found a an option. Perhaps my chipset does not need it?

Its a brand new HP DV7, 7300 odd. 3rd gen i7, 16gb ram, GeForce 650m 2gb, twin 1tb hard drives (I switched the boot drive out to SSD).

So, sofar, the SSD has been working well, its just when I turn it on for the first time each day it gets that error message and needs to restart, then it is fine.

Twin 1TB HDD? Do you still have the old one there? Is it configured as a second drive or is it in a RAID? Is RAID enabled? Did you install any RAID drivers when doing the install?

Have you done the reinstall using the HP Recovery then, not the Windows Image Backup?

No I have not used Raid, the second drive is just an extra drive (D).

I used the recover USB because I am a bit out of my depth and that's what worked! Every other computer I have had came with a DVD (or cd) and I would simply do a fresh install that way.

That article I mentioned above said to do a chkdsk /f on boot, I do not know how to do that. Do you think it might help?

Make sure your SATA cable to your SSD is connected properly, in fact I would replace it if you have another one. I have found with SSD's the data cable has to be perfect otherwise non booting and other random errors can occur with them, might be something to do with the speed of the data transfer on an SSD.

Looks like this has done the trick (cross fingers)

I had tried that before but turns out my problem was that I was not running it as "administrator". Stupid windows, I am the only user.
