wellygary:
onetapu: I feel the problem is with Word on the old computer.

All other computers in the office are able to access Word files from the main computer no problem.

Although:

When I open Explorer on the old computer and try to access a Word file on the main computer, I get the message: "can not find the file ... or one of its components.  Make sure the file and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available".

Which would indicate there is something wrong with the filesharing, though remember I cannot open Word on the old computer.

When I uninstalled and reinstalled Word on the old computer, do all the registry bits not sort themselves out??

Is Word required to run your Old DOS program?,

if not take it off the computer and only run the programs you have to,

You may have a bunch of corrupted registry entries, which could be a real PITA to fix, given how old the system is (most of the tools will unlikely work o such an old OS, and I certainly would be very careful about running any modern fixit tools on such an old system

No Word is not required to run the old DOS programme, but it helps to have Word on there for the person operating that machine.

Dratsab: First thing would be to sort out opening Word - it may be something really simple. Find the normal.dot template, make a backup of it (say normal.bak) then delete it (normal.dot). Then try and open Word from an icon or menu selection.

EDIT: Carected mi speeling

I have already done that on the old computer - renaming the normal.dot template then rebooting.

Remember, Word opens fine until the computer is connected up to the network cable.

Which brings us to the next option - deleting the Data registry key.

If you are comfortable editing the registry (after making a backup) delete the following Word97 registry key:

\\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Word\Data

This registry key will be automatically recreated next time you start word. You don't need to reboot the machine.

If this doesn't work, check all file locations are specified correctly on the machine (Tools|Options|File Locations - iirc).

I think that is out of my league, but my techie son might be able to do it for me when he visits next week.

I will post again after that to let you know how it's going.  Thanks for all the help.

I have figured out how to do this, but when I run regedit and get down to the registry key and right click on it, the only options I have are to Modify, Delete or Rename.  I don't have the option to make a copy (ie Export it) before I delete it.  Is it safe to do so?

Also, when I tried to rename the Normal.dot, I got the message that "Word encourted file corruption when opening C:\Program Files\...\Office\Normal.dot"

Then "changes have been made that affect the global template, Normal.dot"

When trying to rename the normal template, it said "cannot rename Normal.  A file already exists with that name".

Please help!  I am now totally confused

In registry double-click = edit/modify.

And export is in the main file menu

Smells to me the config file paths IN word, are looking for a non existent network share path, and when its online its timing out trying to access it. (offline would just ignore it)

Your normal.dot may not be the correct location it is using to find the default document template either.

Options - Tools - File Locations from memory

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/138059

Will display the source locations it is using. And you may just need to adjust them.

The template within a file may also be wrong. You can check this (like printer settings and layouts can be saved within docs) by opening it and checking the file properties on a working version.

I don't understand all of what you are telling me, but:

- I made the deletions in the registry but that didn't fix the problem.
- I then changed the "File locations" in Word on the old computer.  I changed the "User Templates" and "Workgroup Templates" locations from the main server computer back to the C drive on the old computer, to its own Normal.dot template.
- Word now opens no problem when connected to the main server computer.

So this tells me that there is indeed something wrong with the config of the file paths, but nothing has been altered on the main server computer to bring about this problem.

Any idea what I can now do?

Right so it was paths pointing to a network location like I thought and now fixed?

Don't beat yourself up about it. File path handling in old apps is funny. If user rights change, file permissions change (someone over-writing the template it was looking for can do this), or even the way the network sharing is setup is changed if it trys to access non existent paths etc (like it was doing when online as apposed to offline) this sort of thing happens.

Like I say, embedded template options in files can mess with local settings when you open them etc. Hard to pinpoint what changed.

Thank you for all your help, Oblivian.  It does my head in when I have this kind of problem (I am a Virgo!) and HAVE to solve it.  I think I will copy the main server templates onto the old machine, use those and then save docs back to the main server.  That will kind of solve the problem, thanks.

onetapu: I have a Winword fault when trying to open Word 97 in Windows 98.

Please don't give me flack that I am hopelessly out of date and need to upgrade!  This is only one of 6 computers in our business which I HAVE to keep running as it has a very old DOS-based programme which is essential for me to keep using.

This 'very old' dos program... how large is this program? Can it be rewritten? Hire an IT student as a holiday project for them.

Yeah what does it do?

It's very precarious to be relying on an old program running only an old machine.. what if the machine dies totally...
