The reason USB boot didn't work, is because you copied the ISO file to the risk. You need to use a tool to do this, the tool copies the files within the ISO in a specific way along with files to make the disk bootable.

When I bought this laptop, I went into the BIOS and changed first boot to the USB. No optical drive. The option to boot from USB was one of the 3 options in the BIOS.

After I caused the BSOD, I was going to boot from a program on a USB stick to fix it but got a message that there was no USB boot option on the laptop. I then looked in the BIOS to find that the USB boot option was completely removed. It was gone days ago.

Often (not always), these options only show if the bootable device is connected. Unless you updated the bios (you'd know if you did) the option can't just disappear.

All I know is that when I received this laptop, I went into the BIOS, with nothing plugged into any USB port and observed three items in the Boot Configuration. The first one was the SSD, the second one was the USB and the third one was the Network. I used the F keys to move the USB boot to the top, which left the SSD as second.

Then, a couple of months later, I got the BSOD. I downloaded Kyhi's Windows 10 Recovery Tools - Bootable PE Rescue Disk from here https://www.tenforums.com/software-apps/27180-windows-10-recovery-tools-bootable-rescue-disk.html

After creating the rescue media on a USB stick and removing it, I turned off the laptop, inserted the stick and turned on the laptop. The stick showed signs of being accessed and then a long thin box showed with the message along the lines of there being no USB boot on the laptop. When I went into the BIOS, I saw that there were only two boot options show, the SSD and the Network. In another screen in the BIOS, USB Boot shows as Enabled but back at the other screen where you choose your boot option, the USB option has disappeared.

I have restored this Lenovo from its recovery Partition and the USB boot option still does not show. I don't think that the Recovery that I did would touch the BIOS at all.

It is most strange and I will be contacting Lenovo to see what can be done. I hope I can overwrite the BIOS with the same version. If not, there is a newer version available that other users say they have had trouble with on the Lenovo Forum. My current BIOS has a Roll Back option so I may have to upgrade and then roll back. By Roll Back, I hope they mean I can flash it with the full previous one.

When I think of it, I was able to boot from the USB stick that the Windows Creator tool wrote on. Later on, I will try to see if the Kyhi stick is seen, or not. If it is seen, like the Creator stick but the USB boot option is not showing in the BIOS, there must be some corruption in the BIOS. That will need to be fixed.

I am off to bed now, it has been a stressful day as I have just got off the phone with Microsoft getting them to activate my Pro upgrade from a few months ago but which failed to automatically be recognised by their servers. All good now, Pro is activated. Tomorrow, after the Windows updates, I am putting on Macrium Reflect and making an image, like I should have done!

i doubt the bios is corrupted. just get some sleep and it will have usb boot again ... like magic ...

Just to clarify, I did all the downloading and configuring USB sticks on another laptop. But you probably knew that. lol.

Darn it, I just had to know. I just went into the BIOS and there is still no USB boot to choose.

I will go down to the store where I bought it as they have this model on display and it is so fast to get into the BIOs by inserting a pin into a hole & choose BIOs from the menu.

Check if the stick you are writing is for legacy or UEFI boot, recent machines have no legacy boot option or its hidden many levels deep in the setup because it makes things slow to boot.

You are right, the BIOS was not corrupted. I phoned Lenovo support and explained to the person that I can't boot from a bootable USB stick. I told him that I had done a Factory Restore. I went into the BIOS and told him that the USB boot option is not showing. He did not know why so he got me to flash the BIOS to the latest one. That made no difference. He still did not know why. I explained that before the Factory Restore, I had moved the USB boot choice to be first boot so why is it different now? The conversation finished. I started looking on the Lenovo support forum and came across this: "When attempting to boot from a USB drive, connect the USB drive to the system before entering the BIOS, or it may not show up in the boot order." I did that and the USB boot option was there but was the second boot, under the 1st boot SSD. I moved it up to the top and tested. With the laptop off, I insert the USB stick, boot and it boots into the Macrium environment. Yahoo.....

Should I approach Lenovo for a job? I now know more than the support tech. lol

UEFI boot is my laptop and I followed detailed instructions on the Macrium Knowledge Base about using the CMD Prompt to prepare the stick.

It now turns out that was an overkill. lol
