jtbthatsme: "There are some good reasons to announce it today a few months before its available - so people know that its coming and take that into account when choosing purchasing strategies etc "

Sorry I don't think a lot of people looking at a tablet are interested in seeing something they can't get just yet. I know many people that won't even wait a few days to halve the price of a purchase (as go to somewhere like DSE to get a flash drive as opposed to buying from a online retailer for a lot cheaper).

Sure there will be people who do do as you say but a lot of people and markets are relying on impulse buying for supermarkets this is their bread and butter and they do store layouts specifically to encourage that.

Knowing a product is coming is good for a lot smaller market than knowing I can have x product on x date and preorder it now or simply buying the best available to meet your needs now.

Just for reference I am in no way a Apple fanboy don't own one in any form and won't they make good products but price them for maximum profit and idiots eat them up. As for this upcoming Windows tablet it looks good on a spec sheet but at the end of the day is it really going to do anything different than all the rest when it comes out??? I think and hope it does well and brings something new, as just another tablet that plays music, video and has a nice display with good storage is not really anything special.

Or is it that it will integrate well with your pc supposed to be the big selling point??? Ipad integrates well with the Mac PC / Laptop range doesn't it. I hope the keyboard is not the drawcard gimmick as sorry but a tablet pc with a plug in keyboard is a little too much like a laptop don't you think???

Businesses that are working out their companion device strategy, doesn't tend to be impulse

Windows 8 & Windows RT has a pretty interesting security & manageability story to businesses as well

I'll probably buy one. Or two. One for home and one for work.

I'm into Windows 8 and don't mind the metro interface for the desktop.

There are quite a few people at work with ipads and other tablets at the moment, but I'm pretty sure they aren't integrated with anything other than our non-corp WiFi. It would be interesting to see, and maybe trial, how a W8 tablet can feature as a member of the domain and other enterprise Microsoft services such as Exchange and Sharepoint.

The old chestnut of data security will be forefront, and compatibility with legacy applications too, and well have to wait and see if MDM will be required. The ball is in their court - they advertise W8 being an ideal filip for getting BYOD in place, but practicality is a must!

I think that is a good and balanced summary.

Like the iPad, Galaxy Tab and others it is a good tablet, it will be great for portable consumption.  Whats the differentiation? For the iPad it seems to be the pure quality of it. The sales numbers bear that out despite nice other tablets. The nice Android tablets are great for those that prefer the freedom of their OS. Thats good. The Surface's top point is that it can real a full Windows install, so its really been designed as not a tablet, but a tablet PC. How will that affect performance and battery life? How will using a pen work in productivity apps? I'd probably prefer a netbook if I'm looking at productivity/portability on the run.

The keyboard case is weird. They've been around for ages, there are a large number of them available for the iPad, and I assume Android tabs as well. So its not new at all, but good marketing. Do you get a choice for a flashier, better third party one?

In conclusion I don't feel thee is anything new apart form the 3 main OS's all getting on a par for devices. The hardwares are getting similar across phones and tablets. The OS's all do the same things more or less in slight or larger varying methods. To me, the future key is easy integration for the masses.  iPhone, iPad, Apple TV to your TV.  WP7 phone, Surface, Xbox to your TV. Android I'm not sure where they are in this space but they have similar?

A desktop PC working well on a tablet? I'm not sure. But fun to be watching the big players evolve and push each other, great for us consumers.

I've always used ultraportable laptops because when I used to travel a lot simply lugging the weight of a standard laptop around was tiresome. The netbook form factor with the ability to use a docking station (or simply add a better resolution and larger screen once on-site) is a great solution.

More recently for shorter trips (> 1 week) I've taken my 7inch Tablet in it's cover, which includes a keypad. And of course a mobile-phone. The portability and connectivity (with wifi and/or a suitable SIM) are awesome, and in seconds I can remove it from the cover for ebooks and movies.

Currently I really still need a PC (laptop/desktop) for software and corporate reasons, but give me a viable option that'll cut back on one of those devices and it's worth giving it a serious look. But how long one waits for that.....

Nathan, do you have any information yet on whether or not this will be available outside of the US or will it be another Zune? Importing my Zune was one thing, but something like this I'd want local support for - and I can see huge potential in this (I've now frozen looking at an iPad...)

sorry we don't have a NZ release date sorry

What we've announced is availability of the RT model in the US at Windows 8 general availability and the Pro version around 90 days later

Obviously I'm dead keen to see these in NZ, there is a lot of interest

I got rid of my iPad for limited functionality. It was basically a glorified ebook reader. This I'm excited for. I've been waiting for a fully-functional OS in a package and with the interface of a tablet. I can definitely see this replacing home computers for a lot of people. Get home and just plug this straight into a dock and voila.

Watch the keynote closely - looks like Internet Explorer while loading Bing crashed during the presentation. Rather than admitting that it's still a work in progress and recovering gracefully, Sinofsky ran and swapped tablets.

Crap happens during a live demo but covering up is even worse.

Props to them for a great idea - it has not changed my perception of Microsoft. (Not to imply good or bad)

Aah, not this again! That Microsoft tablet was not the first tablet, this was made in 1989, and who are these people making these claims?? :)

Cheers,
Joseph

I watched a series of YouTube videos last night, many many from Apple keynotes, of things going wrong. Hilarious.
That dude should have handled it better, did you see the look in his eyes! To quote Jobs "That's why we have backups!"

Cheers,
Joseph

More Fail! http://www.bgr.com/2012/06/22/microsoft-surface-wi-fi-connectivity-only/

I just don't get the direction MS are heading right now!

I am wondering about whether this tablet will need to reboot to have updates applied to it, or will take a while to boot up?
